2009!!! wow What an Year

What an year we had. Six trophies with a team and manager who seems to have inherited the "Midas Touch". Everything Guardiola touched turned into goal within minutes. Lionel Messi's "Goal From Heart" sealed the perfect season for Barca in 2009. The achivements of this Barca side will be written with Golden Ink in the history books of the game. I don't know whether any team will be able to replicate what our boys have done, may not atleast in this century. It all started with a stunning last minute victory against Chelsea. Statistically it all started from that stunning Yaya Toure's goal against Atletic Bilbao but I would prefer to see the Iniesta's Chelsea goal as the pivotal in Barca's success of this year. Had that didn't happen it could have gone all the wrong way in this year. That goal was god sent, sure there were enough controversy surrounding that match but no one can question that goal. Guardiola looked like had lost all the hope so did all Barca fans, I was about to turn off the TV as I couldn't bear to see teh highlights, then that "Moment from Heaven" happened - Lionel Messi played the ball to Iniesta, Iniesta against his usual nature decided to take the shot and the ball ended in the goal sending Barca to Rome. The match against Manchester United was an example of how the season went - perfect to the plan. Barca had played much better game throughout the season and was for me below par in the final, but still they were miles ahead of Manchester United. I had earlier wrote why I though Barca Out Played ManU, Have a look - Why Manchester United were Stunned by FC Barcelona in the Finals?

The season was absolutely perfect for Barca. You may not consider yourself crazy if you thought that the script was written by some Hollywood Director or may be a Bollywood one (because of the melodrama). Barca could have wrapped up the League much earlier but still they stumbled till the "El Clasico" at the Bernebeu to make a definitive step forward. And Boy, they did it in style - thumping a sorry looking Real Madrid side 2-6 in their own backyard. The Copa Del Rey was the first trophy for Barca this year and it did have the "Come Back from Behind" melodrama. On any other day or season Barca might beat Atletic Bilbao straight on, but this season it has to be in this way. Then came the League triumph and the Champions League triumph. The Champions League triumph was an extra-ordinary one. With many of their regulars absent, with a makeshift defense, the English media expected Manchester United to roll over the poor Barca side. But they did under-estimate the two midfield maestro we had and the Argentinian wizard. Once the little midfield giants took control, Manchester United was chasing shadows throughout the match. Iniesta, who was half fit was the best player on the pitch that night. I earlier said that the script might have been written by a bollywood director, want proof - A 34 year old Sylvinho, who when the seasons started never in his wildest dreams expected to be in the Champions League final squad, starting the match in Rome, holding his fort well and registering his second Champions League triumph with Barca. Then came the Super cups. The Spanish super cups came without much drama but the UEFA version had some, with an extra time goal from Pedro clinching the trophy. But then there was enough drama in the World Club Cup triumph - just minutes away from losing the final for the thrid time, Pedro scored to equalise and then Messi found an innovative way to make sure that the winning goal was spectacular.

The problem with such a perfect season is that people still expects more. Now that's the real problem - there is no way Guardiola and his boys could top this season. They have won all they had and to equal the same would take another mammoth effort. Barca is lying currnetly at the top and is well and truly alive in the other two competition. But to expect them to repeat a 2009 once more will be too much to ask. They might do it as it is very clear that they haven't hit the top gear yet - the like of Iniesta, Henry are no where near their last season form, especially Iniesta. May be if he roars back to form we may have a chance but still it is very very difficult. But then we are fans and we will expect out guys to top their performance. Every Barca fan nurtures the dream of seeing Barca retaining their Champions League title at the Bernebeu. It may remain as a dream or may get fulfilled - but going by 2009's success no Barca fan is going to dream little. We have no idea how 2010 would turn out. As Joan Rivers said - "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is God's gift, that's why we call it the present. " We better savour the great season of 2009, as it may never happen again in our lifetime.

Mancini wants Robinho

Brazilian virtuoso Robinho has been linked with Barcelona for the last few months, but Mancini has publicly stated that he wants him to form part of the bigger picture at Eastlands.

Last season. Robinho had his critics for lightweight appearances away from home. For me, Robinho was a breath of fresh air in the first half of the 2008/2009 Premier League season but he's new to English football and I'm sure that under the right management he can sustain a long term future in this league and show how good he really is.

"Robinho is a fantastic player but for a big player like him, it is important to make the history of a club. I played at Sampdoria for 15 years. I wrote the history. It is important. Robinho can do that here." Mancini stated, drawing on his own player experiences and citing the level of loyalty that he demands in players.

Good start Roberto. Now you need some points!

Premier League Christmas fixtures December 2009

Barclays Premiership Christmas matches December 2009

Always a great period for drammatic football action, I'm sure that this Christmas will not dissapoint for some superb Premier League matches. What a busy time this will be for Roberto Mancini - fully expected to beat Stoke at home on Boxing Day as well as Wolves away on Monday 28th as well as sign some galacticos for his new club. In sixth, they will be trying to leap frog over Villa and Spurs to go into fourth and for me this is the area of real excitement this Christmas in the Premier League. There is the small matter of Liverpool's disastrous beginning to their 2009/2010 Premiership campaign. Benitez says that he'll get the Reds into the top four - as does Mancini - there's not enough room for them all and with Villa and Spurs doing so well we are in for a great fight for 3rd/4th.

At the top, Ancelotti's Chelsea have a tough game against in form Fulham who beat Manchester United 3-0 on the weekend. Man Utd have a home match against Wigan which you would imagine them to win, Fergie will be tough on the squad going into this so I think wigan will feel the full Old Trafford factor on the 30th. I can't see past Chelsea this year for the Premier League title. Despite missing the chance to go 6 points clear of Manchester United when the drew at Upton Park against West Ham United, they still look physically and mentally strong enough to go the whole way.

So then at the foot of the table, Portsmouth have a potentially tough Christmas, with a relegation scrap away at West Ham on Boxing Day and entertain Arsenal on the 30th. Avram Grant will be concentrating on the West Ham match as a base point to clawing Pompey out of the bottom 3.

I must say that I am surprised to see Bolton struggling in the bottom 3. Gary Megson's boys were pretty strong last season after their boss dealt well with the pressure on his shoulders. Having just beaten West Ham they would have been dissapointed that their match was postponed last night due to a frozen pitch at the JJB Stadium. THey have to continue scrapping - they face Burnley and Hull in the Christmas period so their target has to be to take 6 points. Phil Brown's Hull City seem really galvanised in their plight to remain in the Premier League - in a way playing Man Utd at this time is good (27/12/2009) because they have nothing to lose other than really taking the game to the reigning champions as they did at the end of last season when they narrowly lost 0-1 in May 2009.

Spurs have a tough Christmas - Harry Redknapp has blocked any players Christmas party and the lily whites have 2 away fixtures - both London derbies. They play Fulham away on Boxing Day which will be an interesting match and then have East London strugglers West Ham United on the 28th December.

Messi Wins the World Player Of The Year Award

Lionel Messi of Barca Adjudged "The Best Player In The World"

Exactly one day after helping Barca secure the World Club Championship with his "Goal from the Heart", Lionel Messi was adjudged the as the FIFA World Player of the Year. It come as no surprise as everyone expected him to win this hands down. Messi secured 1073 points and the second placed Ronaldo secured 352 points. Barca's Xavi Hernandez came third with 196 points followed by Kaka with 190 points and Iniesta with 134 points. The inaugral FIFA Puskás Award for the 'most beautiful goal' of the year went Ronaldo for his goal against FC Porto. Ronaldo's goal secured 17.68 percent of total votes, meanwhile Iniesta's important strike against Chelsea came second bagging 15.64 percent of votes. Lionel Messi has expressed his hapines of becoming the first Argentinian to win the award - "It’s lovely to get this recognition from colleagues and coaches. That makes it even more important. The fact that I’m the first Argentinian to win it is also a great honour." FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award went once again to Brazil's Marta, who incidently has created history by winning her fourth World Player award. The voting pattern went in expected lines but I still believe it is a great injustice to Xavi and Iniesta after being ranked at three and five. Xavi had a better season than Ronaldo for Spain and Barca but still finished thrid behind Ronaldo. The same with Iniesta who also had a very good season atleast better than what Kaka had. But it looks like this is the order of the day, you got to be flambouyant to secure votes in these awards.

Four FC Barcelona Players Feature in FIFA World XI

Meanwhile FIFA has announced a FIFA/FIFPro World XI - Iker Casillas in goal, Daniel Alves, Nemanja Vidic, John Terry and Patrice Evra in defense, a dream midfield line up of Steven Gerrard, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta and a forward line up of Fernando Torres, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barca To Face Stuttgart

I missed to write about the Champions league draw. FC Barcelona got one of the easiest pairing with Stuttgart as opponent. No offence meant to Stuttgart fans and players, but there was a potential chance of facing bayern, AC Milan or Lyon. The first leg of the tie takes place in Stuttgart on 23rd of February and the reaturn leg will take place in Camp Nou on 17th of March. Ex-Barca player Hleb is in the squad of Stuttgart and will make his first return to Camp Nou after the transfer. Stuttgart had a great last season but they are way off colour this season. Bundesliga has reached the half-way mark and Stuttgart lie in the 15th position. So Barca definitely could not have asked for a much better tie. Meanwhile all across Europe there has been some interesting paring for the knockout stage. Italina teams AC Milan and Inter will face Manchester United and Chelsea respectively. The English teams will definitely have the advantage of playing the second leg at home, even then an English - Italian encounter always is volatile.

Real Madrid has been paired with Lyon. The french Champions could be a very strong opponent for Real but again Real plays the second leg at home. The whole line up is given below:

Inter Milan v Chelsea
Lyon v Real Madrid
AC Milan v Manchester United
Olympiakos v Bordeaux
FC Porto v Arsenal
CSKA Moscow v Sevilla
Stuttgart v Barcelona
Bayern Munich v Fiorentina

Meanwhile World Club Champions, Barca has arrived in Kuwait for playing a friendly with local club Kazma Sporting Club.

World Club Cup Final Highlights

Third Time Lucky For Barca; Barca - 2, Estudiantes - 1

FC Barcelona won the 2009 World Club Cup by defeating South American Champions, Estudiantes by two goals to one. Estudiantes went ahead in the first half through Bosselli's goal, Barca left it late to grab an equaliser. Actually the equaliser came in the 88th minute from Pedro's header and Lionel Messi scored a rather beautiful goal with his chest in the second half of second half, to gift Barca their first triump at World stage. With this triump, Barca have won six trophies in 2009. Estudiantes might have been hard done for a momentary lapse of cocentration late in the second half, but Barca were the best team overall. With Iniesta absent Guardiola chose a midfield which had Xavi and Keita along with Busquets.Busquets was preferred Bosellionce again ahead of Toure but overall Toure had greater authority on the match than Guardiola's favourite. Messi, Ibrahmovic and Henry lined up in the offence. The defense had the familiar look with Alves, Puyol, Pique and Abidal lining up together.

Both teams started the match firmly. Estudiantes had a great chance in the fifth minute, Veron who looks like have improved a lot in recent years put Enzo Perez through with a great ball, but Valdes was quick to come off his line block the ball. In the 10th minute Barca had their first chance; Ibrahmovic put Xavi through on goal but he instead of going for the goal tried to square the ball to Henry and the move was eventually closed out. Meanwhile Estudiantes continued with their rather physical approach to the game and referee allowed them to play such a style. That means Barca players were at the receiving end of a lot number of physical fouls. In the 27th minute Veron had a shot from outside the box go wide. In the 35th minute Barca had a great shout for penalty, Xavi was brough down by Albil but the referee decided to look the other way. Then in the 37th minute Estudiantes went ahead; Enzo Perez sent in a great cross into the box, Boselli got inbetween Puyol and Abidal and sent the header into the right corner of the goal. Puyol completely missed the ball. Barca couldn't muster any chances for the rest of half as Estudiantes were keen only to defense.

The second half saw Barca with more vigour to force a favourable result. Guardiola brought in Pedro for Keita and that meant Messi would play a roaming role in middle. In the 48th minute saw his shot go just wide of the far post. In the 61st minute Alves had a great chance; Messi whipped in a great cross from left which the keeper couldn't reach but Alves failed to connect. In the 69th minute Xavi sent a ball to Pedro he skipped past two defenders but his final shot was blocked by keeper's foot. Guardiola brought in Jeffren for Henry in the 83rd minute. In the 89th minute Xavi sent in to the box, the ball ballooned from a defenders' head, Pique did well to win a header and it fell to an unmarked Pedro who looped his header over the advancing keeper's head to take the match to extra time. Extra time was a single side affair. Estudianted were shattered by the late equaliser and Barca were constantly bombarding their goal mouth. Messi and Ibra both had chances in the first half of extra time. But we were abvle to break the Estudiantes resolve in the 110th minute. Alves sent in a great cross into the box from the right which Messi managed to chest past the hapless goal keeper to take Barca 2-1 ahead. That goal shocked Estudiantes further but they came out roaring that resulted in couple of scares towards the end of the match.

This is Barca's second consecutive come-back from behind victory in Club cup. We have been doing this quite often this season but this one was the toughest. At times it looked like the godess of luck was conspiring against Barca but our never say die attitude finally paid off. I read some EPL fans writing that Messi's goal was a hand ball, I would suggest them to see the goal carefully, that was quite a remarkable goal. We were always considered as the best team in the world at this moment and this triumph shuts every doubters mouth. No team in the history of football I guess, has won all the trophies which were in offering in a single year. This is history in making and we would are blessed as we witnessed it with our eyes.

Mark Hughes gets the sack for Mancini

Bookmakers had stopped taking bets on it. The press talked about his 'last day in charge'. After their 4-3 victory over Sunderland, it was confirmed that Mark Hughes was dismissed as Manchester City manager. The statement exaplained that 2 winds from 11 matches wasn't acceptable. Obviously you need a return on investment when you spend £207 million on players but The replacement I found a bit surprising - Roberto Mancini. Potentially a great coach - but is this really a step forward for Manchester City? Certainly there was a feeling that some of the new players didn't feel comfortable with the management set up. I agree with the timing of the appointment, if you have infinite funds for players then let the new boss get his players in so that he can be properly assessed. The existing squad he has is great but I'm sure that some of the big names won't be getting their way and will leave within the next couple of transfer windows.

Good luck Roberto!

Champions League Draw Tonight

FC Barcelona will come to know about their opponent in knock-out stage of Champions league tonight. The draw will take place at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Barca's potential opponents are Bayern Munchen, AC Milan, CSKA Moskva, Porto, Lyon, Stuttgart and Olympiacos. AC Milan with ex-Barca star Ronaldinho. Bayern, Lyon, CSKA and ex-Barca star Hleb featuring Stuttgart all are tough opponents in that group. Even though AC Milan is a pale shadow of their illustrous past, they feature in my list of "should avoid" teams. But a greater look at the other opponents also point to us a fact that this year there may not be any easy fixtures. Barca will be playing the second leg at home, courtesy of emerging as group winners. Bayern Munchen destroyed Juventus away on their way to the knock-out stage, meanwhile Lyon made it through a tough group featuring Fiorentina, Liverpool and themselves. So they all have form in their favour but historically we have done well against these teams.

CSKA will be a tough opponent as they will play more of a physical style and will very tough opponent at home. I would prefer Olympiacos or Porto as opponent. Which is your preferred opponent?
