World Cup Preview - Argentina

Argentina arrives in South Africa in midst of another selection controversy. Pundits across the world is struggling to make sense of Diego Maradona's decision to omit Champions League winners Cambiasso and Zannetti. To an extent mayhem was expected in the selection process, as Maradona had to pick from a possible 100 players(he used that much for qualifying process). That in itself shoudld be a record. The final 23 players who is making to Argentina are Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andújar (Catania), Diego Pozo (Colon); Nicolas Burdisso (Roma), Martín Demichelis (Bayern Munich), Walter Samuel (Inter Milan), Gabriel Heinze (Marseille), Nicolas Otamendi (Vélez Sarsfield), Clemente Rodríguez (Estudiantes), Ariel Garcé (Colon); Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), Juan Sebastián Veron (Estudiantes), Maximiliano Rodríguez (Liverpool), Mario Bolatti (Fiorentina), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Jonas Gutiérrez (Newcastle), Javier Pastore (Palermo); Sergio Agüero (Atlético Madrid), Diego Milito (Internazionale), Martin Palermo (Boca Juniors), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Gonzalo Higuaín (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona). Zannetti's and Cambiasso's exclusion doesn't come as surprise for those who followed Argentinian qualification campaign. After a series of not so good performances, both the players fell out of favour with El Diego.

Going by betting market, Argentina is currently fourth favourite to lift the cup, behind Spain, Brazil and England respectively. Surprisingly a more compact Dutch nationa team is placed behind Argentina. A look at the squad, we will clearly know what has prompted that favourites tag - it's that attacking line-up. A squad list consisting of Lionel Messi, Milito, Agüero, Tevez, Higuaín and Palermo should give sleepless nights to opponents. But I doubt many may lose sleep as only two of them is expected to start the match for Argentina. There precisely lies the biggest problem for Argentina. Most of the abundance of talent lies upfront and will be unused for majority of tournament. Like I have written earlier - Solving Argentinian Puzzle, Maradona has to adapt a formation which utilises atleast three of them in every match. The quality in midfield and especially defense is pretty sub-standard. The midfield most probably will have a combination of Angel Di Maria, Mascherano, Veron and Maxi Rodriguez, not a bad combination but many of them are pretty much out of form. How Maradona will organise his defense also need to be seen. Walter Samuel after an excellent display at Inter could be the heart but the likes of Martín Demichelis, Henize all are quite risky against fast paced opponents.

If this Argentinian team is going to win the Cup, it will be soley based on their pure attacking strength. That's why I always believed it would be better to move Messi into the midfield rather than upfront. Many times we have seen Messi struggling to get into the game in an Argentinian jersey. This is precisely due to the fact that the midfield behind him is not letting him. Messi is the trump card of Maradona in this World Cup and the success of his team will depend upon how he use him. The best way is to play Messi as a pivot lying behind the two centre forward and infront of a three man midfield. That way he will get into the game more often and Maradona can use the two of either Tevez, Higuaín, Milito or Agüero upfront. With Veron, Mascherano and Maxi potentially going to fill the midfield, there is a serious drought of creativity there. So Angel di Mari should be a must as he can only provide the pace and freshness from that midfield. I have no idea how Maradona will line-up his defense, but he has to make sure that he don't play Henize in the centre of defense.

No other player in the history of the game would have done so much for his national side's triumph in World Cup like Maradona. He single handedly took Argentina to World Cup triumph in 86 and to the World Cup final in 90. We ahve seen the "Goal of Century" time and again, but how about this wonder assist againt Brazil in 1990.

But Maradona has to stop expecting his players to display the same magic. Maradona as a player lies in a different league compared to these players. We expect Messi to match his genius, but El Pulga may take some more years to match his idol at his best. Last World Cup, Argentina had the best team in the tournament but went out due to their conservative strategy against Germany. But this time around the team is not that perfect, but they still have the likes of Messi, Aguerro, Higuain, Milito etc who can single handedly change the course of a match. And a number of those Gentlemen have to play out of their skin if they have to take home the cup. The last time Argentina lifted the cup was with the help of the genius of Maradona. May be that was the missing piece all these years, and now they have the genius as the Manager. But only his managerial skills remains the biggest stumbling block as of now.

World Cup Preview - Spain

With eight FC Barcelona players in the national squad, Spain has to be the name on every Barca fans lips. I have to admit that they are just my second choice behind my all time favourites Argentina. Spain will be the most fancied team in this World Cup. Spain always had a wonderful team but somehow managed to fail consistently at the biggest stage. They were never counted as a favourite in any tournament prior to the Euro 2008. The Euro 2008 success has put Spain to where it belongs. That triumph has instilled a sense of self belief in the Spanish National side and most importantly in their fans. Spain comes to the World Cup with an extra ordinary unbeaten run behind them. The only blemish was the defeat to United States of America in the confederation cup. That may be come as a blessing in disguise as no Confederation Cup winners have ever lifted the World Cup. (History has this uncanny habit of repeating itself.)

Many national sides are struggling to put a decent looking starting eleven. In contrast Spain is facing a problem of plenty. I don't think there is any team at the World Cup who has excellent cover for each position like the Spaniards. The abundance of talent is displayed by the sheer fact that the best midfielder in England, Cesc Fabregas will only start from the bench for majority of the games. The final 23 man squad for the World Cup is - Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), José Manuel Reina (Liverpool), Víctor Valdés (Barcelona), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Gerard Piqué (Barcelona), Raúl Albiol (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Álvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Xavi Hernández (Barcelona), Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), Cesc Fábregas (Arsenal), Javi Martínez (Athletic), Jesús Navas (Sevilla), David Silva (Valencia), Juan Manuel Mata (Valencia), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), David Villa (Barcelona), Pedro Rodríguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Athletic). The expected starting line-up most probably woul be Iker, Capdevila, Puyol, Pique, Ramos, Xavi, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Silva, Torres and Villa. Now with the signing of Villa half of the starting line-up will feature Barca players.

Spain has been placed in Group H along with Honduras, Chile and Switzerland. Spain is expected to cruise through that Group with ease, but that precisely could be Spain's biggest problem. Spain is destined to face either Brazil, Ivory Coast or Portugal in the round of 32, depending on who emerges from the Group of Death. Which precisely means that from the mediocre challenge posed by Chile, Honduras and Switzerland , it could be a sharp elevation. That means Spain may have to peak early and sustain that throughout the rest of the tournaments. Another problem will be the over dependence of Xavi. Xavi without any doubt is the real heart of the Spanish side. Arsenal fans may argue that Fabregas is quite capable of out-performing Xavi. But I beg to differ. Rewind back a year, back to the USA vs Spain semi final in the Confederation cup. The USA coach kept a man around Xavi all the time cutting his creativity which incidentally Fabregas wasn't able to provide. May be the absence of Iniesta was the biggest problem for Spain that night - Xavi and Iniesta. In that sense Iniesta would be as crucial as Xavi. Another problem for Spain would be something this Barca side has faced many times this season - good teams parking the bus in their box. With Torres and Villa upfront they may already have the firepower to overcome those tactics but this could be a tactic Spain will encounter more than once in this World Cup. The likes of England, Italy or even Brazil may use this tactic against the Spaniards if they are destined to face each other.

On paper Spain has the most complete team to win this World Cup. But the fun of World Cup is that most of the time the best team never managed to win the tournament. Hungary in 54, the dutch in 74 and 98 and the Argentinians in last World cup all stand as the best examples. To win the World Cup you require a bit of luck and lots of grit. There are some major players for Spain who are coming back from injury. The likes of Torres and Fabregas has not yet recovered fully from their injury. But the Spain squad has so much abundance of talent that they could with stand those. But there are some crucial players who cannot get injured if Spain has to keep their hopes alive. The first one is Xavi Hernandez, the second one is David Villa. We all know that Torres has been struggling with injury in the last year and that makes the role of David Villa very much important. Another could be Iniesta, Spain may not miss him against the smaller teams but against the bigger team he is a tremendous weapon. As Torres said recently, this has to be the best chance for Spain to lift the World Cup but we have to wait and see whether they are able to fulfill the same.

Dilemma in Barca's Cantera

For the past two weeks, David Villa and Cesc Fabregas has been dominating FC Barcelona news columns throughout the world. There is no clarity still with the pursuit of the ex-Barca star, but there looks like more trouble emerging for Barca from within the house. FC Barcelona management and fans has always been proud about their youth academy and the quality that churns out every season. Now it looks like that abundance of quality is going to give us a new headache this summer. Almost five players from FC Barcelona Athletic is at the end of their contract. Jonathan dos Santos, Thiago Alcantara, Victor Vasquez, Gai Assulin and Marc Bartra are the youngsters whose future needs to be resolved quickly. The biggest problem for negotiating a deal is the lack of first team action at Barca. Jonathan dos Santos and Thiago saw some first team actions this season under Guardiola, but with Barca going for a buying spree they may see very limited action next season.

Jonathan has left for Mexico to join the Mexican national team. He has been selected in the 24 man initial squad for World cup. At the time of his leaving for National duty, Barca has not been able to reach a deal about his future. The club has been negotiating with him for sometime and the hope is that we will be able to pin him to a new deal after the World Cup. He along with Thiago is very much in Guardiola's plans. But at an age of 20 he is going to demand more first team action. Thiago's case is also similar as the club has not yet been able to tie him down with a deal. But it is believed that the negotiations are pretty much in an advanced stage. Gai Assulin's future at the club is not clear so is Victor Vasquez. Assulin is being courted by teams from England and both could move away from the club in search of first team action. Marc Bartra also will see his contract end in June, but the club is very much involved in extending the deal. Along with Muniesa, he is expected to take over the Barca's defensive reigns in the future.

As I said earlier, the biggest problem is that lack of first team action. If Fabregas also returns, then the midfielders will see very less action. In that aspect the club will be hoping that FC Barcelona Athletic secures promotion in play-off.

Official 2010-11 Season Barca Jersey Revealed

FC Barcelona has revealed the Official Jersey for 2010-11 season today coinciding with the presentation of David Villa. The traditional home jersey have the thicker Blaugrana stripes compared to last season. The other change is the introduction of Red shorts compared to the last season's blue ones. Inside the collar the words "Tots units fem força" (Together we are strong) are taken from the club hymn and on the left sleeve the slogan "Més que un club" (More than a club) is embroidered. . There is a drastic change in the new Barca away jersey. The away jersey is pre-dominantly green with the Blaugrana colours across the chest. I seriously like the away green colours but the Blaugrana stripe kills the look. The last time we wore the Red shorts was in the season 2005-06 which was a Champions League winnng season. From the official site - "The new FC Barcelona shirts are unique in the same way that the shirts worn last term were also in the fact that they are manufactured from recycled plastic bottles".

Rumours, Rumours Everywhere, not a single one to Believe

Ain't it quite strange? When I wrote the match report for the Valladoid vs Barca match, many here thought that ideally would be my last post for the next two months. With my experience with previous transfer season, I knew that wasn't the case. The truth simply is that the real entertainment off the pitch starts the moment the transfer window opens or in other words when the season ends. Usually in a World Cup year, the transfer market usually heats up after the Showpiece event. But this time it has become hyper active much earlier. FC Barcelona should be blamed for setting the fire with their early pursuit of David Villa and Cesc Fabregas. They didn't wait for Real Madrid to inflate the market and started their business from the very next day after their La Liga defense. Already huge war of words are going between Arsenal and Barca fans all over the web for their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas. As I wrote in my earlier post, At 80 Million, Fabregas Deal Better Be Dead, the entire Cesc Fabregas story has shot up after Spanish Journo, Guillem Balague has suddenly reported about Fabregas expressing his interest to return home. The entire Spanish media based in Barcelona and the likes of Sid Lowe, Martni Samuel from England helped in raising the story to enormous proportion. The truth still remain that all these are mere specualtions and nothing has been clarified by any parties. Arsenal fans are rightly feeling being targetted not only by Spanish Journalist but also those from their own countries. At this moment nobody can say anything about this one and we may have to wait and watch.

Ridiculous Rumours linking Rooney and Torres To Barca has Emerged

The fun watching how a transfer window develop is the fantasy associated with it. Otherwise how will you explain the emergence of the strange rumours about Barca's attempt to sign Rooney and Torres. The Rooney story emerged the very next day after our capture of David Villa. The story describes how Barca is readying a 80 Million Pound to bring the England international to Camp Nou. Quite strange isn't it, as if we already don't have a crowded house for the centre forward position. Now as if that wasn't enough some dead brain in England has suddenly dreamt about a 70 Million offer from Barca to sign Torres. If all these stories comes true, we may have to change the formation to 3-2-5 to accomadate all these stars.

With all these non-sense stroies flying around, you may find it difficult to recognise the genuine ones. One genuine story recently emerged is the 17 Million offer for Yay Toure by both Chelsea and Manchester City. I seriously doubt whether Chelsea will go for him with Essien and Obi Mikel in their squad. But Toure in recent matches has shown a glimpse of his attacking talent but still he can't score to save his life. That looks like a decent developing story, even though that will see my favourite Toure moving away from camp Nou. But that is bound to happen. The Barcelona based media house, SPORT looks like is determined to send Zlatan Ibrahimovic to England. They have started a serious of stories which links the Swedish striker to Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. With their huge bank account, Manchester City looks like is a default participant in any Transfer deals. The Barca management has made it clear that Ibra is not going anywhere but that is never going to dissuade SPORT.

Pedro and Valdes Makes into World Cup Squad

Spanish National side Coach, Vicente del Bosque has announced the final 23 men squad who will be making the trip to South Africa. The biggest surprise has been the inclusion of Victor Valdes and Pedro Rodriguez. To an extent Victor Valdes inclusion should not have come as a surprise. With two years of consistent performance he has earned the right to represent Spain in international level. Isn't it very strange that this is his first call to National side. The real surprise was the inclusion of Pedro. It's a great reward to the wonderful season he had. With the addition of David Villa we right now have eight players in the World Cup squad. As expected Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Pique, Busquets and Villa all have made in to the list. The full list is given below :

Goaleepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), José Manuel Reina (Liverpool), Víctor Valdés (Barcelona).

Defenders: Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Gerard Piqué (Barcelona), Raúl Albiol (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Álvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia).

Strikers: Jesús Navas (Sevilla), David Silva (Valencia), Juan Manuel Mata (Valencia), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), David Villa (Barcelona), Pedro Rodríguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Athletic).

At 80 Million, Fabregas Deal Better Be Dead

With reports emerging from London about Arsenal slapping a price 80 Million pound, the Cesc Fabregas transfer saga has truly heaten up. Suddenly the great enthusiasm that surrounded the Barca Management regarding Fabregas has made way to caution. The recent comments made by sporting director, Txiki Begiristain is a testimony of the sudden realisation that this one is not going to be easy. Begiristain recently said "What counts here is Arsenal and what their decision is, because Cesc is a very important player for them. It is great news that he wants to come. Sometimes what players want does not happen ,they have contracts in force. I think that at some stage Cesc will come to FC Barcelona. I don't know when but I have the feeling that he is a Barcelona player and he would love to play here. But we have to respect Arsenal and the contract he has there." Now that's a sudden change in attitude as it was reported that the Barcelona Hierarchy recently gave a "Now or Never" ultimatum to Cesc Fabregas. Now there is a realisation that Arsenal will do whatever needed to hold on to their captain and it's essential not to irritate the Premier League club.

It's been quite a drama since the day Barca won the La Liga title. Laporta, who is at the end of his tenure highlighted the need to complete the tranfer deals before the Show piece event in South Africa. A very wise decision, when you consider that after the World Cup the market will suddenly be inflated. Barca management highlighted Cesc and Villa as their primary target this summer. The David Villa deal was sure to happen as Valencia was looking to get out of the their financial mess. But from the begining Cesc Fabregas deal looked like a fantasy. It was difficult to understand why Arsenal will let go off their captain, who has four years left in his contract. Then came the twist, there were reports emerging rapidly from Spain and England about Cesc Fabregas expressing his wish to rejoin Barcelona. That changed the whole scenario, now suddenly it became something like "The Kid who got away, wants to come home". Barcelona suddenly sensed the oppurtunity to grab the player and made an offer which is reported to be around 35 Million Euros. With Arsenal putting a price tag of 80 Million pound, the deal looks like dead for the moment.

A price tag of 80 Million would be an attempt by Arsenal to ward off the Barca interest in the player. According to market experts, Arsenal may finally agree to a price around 50 Million. Now that raises some serious questions. Number one, Why should you pay that much for a player who may not even start in the present FC Barcelona setup. I am not saying that Fabregas, if signed will struggle to find first team action. He most probably will walk into the midfield and Iniesta will be pushed further up. The real question is "Is This necessary?" The last time we did something similiar was when we bought Henry, who naturally would have occupied Ronaldinho's position. The thinking at that time was either of Ronnie or Henry can play the centre striker role. How badly we were proven wrong. Henry settled into the team only after the exit of Ronaldinho explains the whole situation. The chances of Fabregas upsetting Iniesta or Xavi is very less, but at 50 Million could be a needless buy. The second and the more important question would be whether we are losing once again the bigger picture in the whole drama. As the squad stands at the moment, what we need the most is a player who can cover up for the front lef position. The position soon to be vacated by Henry. Pedro has done well in that position but we need a genuine match winner at that position. Pedro is too inexperienced. A David Silva, Mata or a Robben could be the ideal solution. If in the end we failed to land Cesc and get distarcted from filling the void, we could be in for some trouble next season.

Anyway one good thing that has happened is that we have entered the market much earlier this season, this will give us more time even if some deals fall flat. But you have to question whether it is a good thing to create so much fuss around a player, who could be crucial to Spain's ambition at the World Cup. The last thing Ve=icente del Bosque wants is an unsettled Cesc Fabregas in the team, who may find it difficult to concentrate on the pitch due to the actions off it. It's a good thing that the Barca Management is striving har to conclude the deal as early as possible. But it's easier said than none. Arsenal has demonstarted very clearly that they want to let go off their Captain. And this has all the recipes to become a prolonged saga. One could hope that this don't go the same way like last season's attempt to sign Villa. In the end Villa had a tough time winning back the loyalty of the Valencia fans. The last thing Arsenal would want is an unsettled Captain leading their side, so it's better for Arsenal to come out in the open and clarify what's going on. Meanwhile just gera up for more entertainment with this saga as the new twist is round the corner.

Barca and Valencia Agree on Villa Deal

FC Barcelona signs David Villa for 40 Million Euros

FC Barcelona has completed their first signing of the summer in the form of David Villa from Valencia. THe official FC Barcelona website has broken the story just moments ago. Barca was widely expected to copmplete the signing by Friday. FC Barcelona will pay Valencia 40 million Euros for the prolific Spanish striker. Villa is expected to reach Barcelona on Thursday evening and will undergo mandatory medical tests on Friday morning. We all know these are mere formalities. Villa is expected to sign the deal around Friday afternoon followed by the official presentation to the Camp Nou public. Camp Nou will be open for public during the presentation and trust me we may see scenes similiar to Ibrahimovic signing. Villa will sign a four year deal with an option for a further year. It is not yet known how much Villa will take home at Barca.

This was one transfer which I was looking forward from last season. Villa is expected to fit easily into Barca's playing style. In David Villa, FC Barcelona will have one of the most prolific scorers of all time. David Villa has played in Zaragoza before making a move to Valencia. Villa has not yet won the Pichichi but La Liga's top assisting player in the 2006-07 season. That explains his versatility. David Villa is Spain's current number one choice as a Centre forward. He earned the Golden Boot in Spain's successful Euro 2008 campaign. He now will be looking forward to recreate the magical partnership between Xavi and Iniesta at the club level. He also would be looking forward to weave a magical partnership with the Argentinian sensation, Lionel Messi. I can say now that we have effectively closed the gap following Eto'o departure. There are rumours that the arrival of Villa means exit for Ibrahimovic. I seriously doubt those rumours.

Best Barca Goals of 2009-10 Season

There is no particular order in these. I just picked a bunch of last season's wonderful goals for a recap of the wonderful season we had.

1) Xavi's Wonder Through Ball

It's a huge injustice that the record books will have Messi as the goal scorer and Pedro as the player who provided the assist. Nonsense, it was Xavi singlehandedly who created this one. After seeing this you feel pity for all other midfielders in the world.

2) Messi's Goal at Bernabeu
Again Messi and Xavi comibines here. It is in the list for the sheer importance of the goal.

3) Messi's Wonder Goal Against Zaragoza
No explanation needed.

4) Pedro's Wonder Goal
I felt pity for the coach who was about to make a change and saw this happening.

Shakira's Waka Waka Dance Video for World Cup

Pop star Sensation from North America Shakira made the theme song for the upcoming Fifa World Cup 2010 in the South africa. The singer's new track Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) is the official song for the World Cup instead of the highly popular K'naan's song Wavin' Flag. Both Shakira and Freshlyground will perform together at the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony on July 11th.
She is definitely hot and don't mind watching her shake it. Her song on the other hand sucks. I was Impressed by the K'naan's Wavin Flag that was a better than this Song.

Barca close to Signing Villa and Cesc

If rumours emerging from Spain and England are to be believed, FC Barcelona is pretty close to completing the signing of David Villa and Cesc Fabregas. Joan Laporta has made it a priority to complete the signing of these two Spanish internationals before the end of his tenure. Actually Cesc Fabregas has expressed that he would like to see his future resolved before the World Cup in South Africa. If Barcelona based daily Sport is to be believed, then we most probably will sign David Villa by the end of the week. That may be a bit of exaggeration but Laporta himself have said that the negotiations with Valencia over David Villa is in an advanced stage. Mean while David Villa has learnt from last season's mistakes and is not revealing anything about his desire. He has stated that he will make a move away from Valencia only if the financial situation forces the club to sell him.

Meanwhile FC Barcelona has made an official approach to Arsenal for bringing back the Catalan boy, Cesc Fabregas. The initial reports suggests that Arsenal has slapped a price tag of 50 Million on their captain. But situation has changed a bit after a reported call made by Fabregas to Wenger, in which he has made the manager know about his desire to join back his childhood club. There is no way we can confirm these rumours. But the fact that even Guardian reported the story means there could be some truth in these stories. Remember it was Guardian's Sid Lowe who reported last season's Ronaldo transfer. But it is yet to be seen what will be the price tags. It's expected that David Villa will cost Barca around 40 Million euros and Fabregas also could cost somewhat similiar. There are indication that Toure could be involved in the deal for Fabregas. There are rumours that even Ibrahimovic could be used for Fabregas swap, but I can't understand the sense in such a move.

FC Barcelona Player Rating for 2009-10 Season

Victor Valdes - 8.5 - Victor Valdes won his third Zamora Trophy by a whooping 10 goal margin. A closer look and you will say that this won was the most deserving of all his trophies. Even in last season, he was his usual self, producing some telling saves, but at the same time producing some disastrous mistakes. This season he was a revelation. There were very few mistakes he made and was called upon on action in more than the usual occasion. He proved to everyone that he is the best when it comes to one on one situation and with every passing year he is improving by leaps and bounds. He should consider himself really unlucky if he is not on the plane to South Africa.

Dani Alves - 7 - Another consistent year, but nowehere near his performance of last season. He had to live up with a patch where his form was really below par. Very lively in most of the matches and I firmly believe he is missing playing with Messi on the right. But overall a very decent season, struggled against quality opponents. With Alves we may have to live up with the occasional low profile performances.

Gerard Piqué - 8.5 - Still don't understand how a manager like Ferguson could let him go. Good for us though. After joining his childhood club back, he has been stunning. Constistent performance throughout the match and the advantage with him is that he present a good option in attacking corners. There were some excellent performances but the best has to be the 1-0 win against Inter Milan at Camp Nou.

Rafael Márquez - 6 - Way past his prime and many believe he to be leaving soon. But I expect him to stay here for one more season. He is quite a utility player but his lack of speed nowadays is killing him. Still not a bad cover for our top three defenders. Pep Guardiola did show confidence in him in many matches, but he was responsible form a number of goals we conceded.

Carles Puyol - 7.5 - Another good season from the Captain marvelous. He is slowly moving past his prime but he still is a tremendous fighter. He is undoubtedly the most inspirational Barca player on the pitch. Once again played in almost all the position in defense - Left Back, Centre Back and Right Back. His positional sense is still a suspect but he always makes up for it with some desperate defending.

Éric Abidal - 7.5 - After reaching Barca with a huge potential, this was the season where he started to live up to his billing. Unfortunately his season was marred with injuries. But whenever he played he looked really good. There were suggestions last season that we have to replace Abidal with some one better, but Abidal silenced all his critics. This season he showed tremendous confidence in going forward and also looked very compact while defending.

Gabriel Milito - 7.5 - It won't be an understatement to claim that Milito was Guardiola's best signing of last season. After a really long injury lay-off there were doubts raised about his ability. But Guardiola rightly put faith in him and boy he was fired for that encounter at Bernabeu. He had some point to prove to Real Madrid. Looks solid and had tremendous understanding with Pique. Has already been rewarded with a contract extension which will see him stay at Barca till 2012.

Maxwell - 7.5 - When Maxwell moved to Barca, everyone expected him to be a cover as Abidal and get limited playing time. But injury to Abidal meant, Maxwell was a memeber of the regular starting eleven. He may not be as compact as Abidal, but he still is a very decent player. His versatality is his key. In Maxwell we have a player who can play as full back on either side and that's a real good news. He played as right back in one match and did impress everyone with his performance. He is a tremendous utility player who can even play in the midfield as a tradidtional winger. He is simply our best business of the summer.

Dmytro Chygrynskiy - 5.5 - Came with huge reputation but failed to live to any of those. May be it is too early to judge him. But at an age of 23 he is not a bad option and could prove vital to Barca's future.

Yaya Touré - 7 - Ok, now to the biggest talikg point of this season. Toure, who was instrumental in last seasons succes was overlooked on many occasions by Guardiola. Toure also struggled when given sporadic oppurtunities. But there is a section in Barca fans who believe firmly that Barca would have been playing in Madrid on Saturday, has Toure started in Milan. He may not have been consistent this season, but did really well in big matches. There was a serious case ofr Guardiola to start him against Inter in San Siro. He could be the first one to be going away from Barca this summer. Arsenal is reportedly interested and Guardiola for some strange reason looks like is interested again in Mascherano. THis could be another Eto'o deal and could come back to haunt us.

Busquets - 7.5 - I am not a huge fan of Busquets and would prefer Toure on any day. But have to admit that Busquets had a very decent season. His play acting could get him in trouble in near future but he was always solid behind our midfield. My belief that he will struggle against Tough opponents was re-inforced by his performance against Madrid at Camp Nou and Inter Milan at San Siro. But when you look back at the whole season he was pretty good.

Xavi Hernández - 9 - The second best player of this season. He once again re-inforced himself as the premier Pass Master of the game. Whenever Xavi struggled the team also did. And that explains his importance to Barca. The teams who negotiated us well are the one who stopped Xavi on his tracks. He played with athigh injury in the end of the season, risking his world cup ambitions for the club.

Andres Iniesta - 7 - Many blame the absence of Inietsa as a major factor for the exit from Champions League. Iniesta could have made life easy for us in that clash against Inter. But there is no hiding from the fact that he has been pretty mediocre this season. Eventhough a mediocre Iniesta is better than many in the squad. He never hit the consistency he shoed last season and when he looked like returning back to form he receieved another injury set back.

Seydou Keita - 7 - Another decent performances. But everyday he is finding the difficulty of replaing someone like Xavi or Iniesta in the midfield. His work rate has been excellent.

Bojan Krkić - 7 - His story was the story of two halves. Before christmas he was casted as the biggest disappointment and past January he has been so sensational.

Zlatan Ibrahimović - 7 - Not a bad season to begin with . More than 20 goals should have been great anywhere but not if you have a 70 million price tag. I always believed he will struggle to fit into Barca's style and well he did. For me he was never a big match player and that showed at many times. None of these were his mistakes. He was brought for the wrong season and it will be unfair to let him go after one season, which actually is not that bad.

Pedro Rodríguez - 8 - Revelation of the season. More goals than Ibrahimovic and he didn't cost a penny. Scored in all six competition. Everyone would be looking to see ho he perform next season.

Lionel Messi - 9.5 - I am not going to write anything about him. The "Best Player on Planet". Last season he had some tough competition from Xavi and Iniesta for being the best Barca player. This season he left everyone behind. $7 goals for a supporting striker is actually too much.

Henry - 6.5 - Definitely going to be his last season. He is struggling for form and playing time. There were some remarkable performances, like the one against Stuttgart.
