Sporting Gijon - 0, Barca - 1
The game started in a dull way. In the 6th minute Sporting appealed for a penalty after Marquez seemed to have blocked off Billic, but the referee called it right. In the 12th minute Messi played the ball to xavi whol slipped it forward for Iniesta, Iniesta got into area but his shot was blocked by goal keeper, Pablo. In the next minute Iniesta sent in a great cross from the right, Ibrahmovic's header hit the post and the rebound recocheted off a defender into goal. But the goal was disallowed as Ibra was adjudged offside. In the 18th minute Miguel played in a great ball to Billic but he panics and shot wide from a really dangerous position. In the 27th minute Moran sent in a great ball from left but Billic's header was close to Valdes. Then in the 29th minute Pedro put Barca in the front. Barca took a quick free kick , Iniesta releases Pedro with a great pass, Pedro with a great run finished the ball cooly into the near corner.
The second half saw Barca rigorously pushing for a second goal. In the 52nd minute Iniesta saw his shot from outside the box go just wide after Pedro has pulled back the ball. In the 55th minute Iniesta sent another great pass putting Ibra ahead but he was crowded out in the box. In the 65th minute Messi saw his shot go agaonisingly close of the wide post after Pedro has pulled the ball back. In the 73rd minute Xavi caught the defense sleeping with a great ball which released Messi on right; Messi pulle dthe ball into the centre for Ibra, who was denied by Pable but the rebound fell to Pedro who only could blast the shot over. Next minute Xavi send in another great ball this time to Ibra in the centre, Ibra held off the defender and fired in on goal, it went in Pedro's path but Lora hurled himself at it conceding a corner. The 1-0 lead meant Sporting showing some intention to get the goal back in the last ten minutes, but they weren't good enough.
FC Barcelona would have hoped for a bigger victory here. But the overall performance of the team was satisfactory. Messi, Iniesta and Xavi were too hot to handle. It is goog to see Iniesta back in his usual form tearing opposition. Ibrahmovic was very poor throughout the match. He looked low on confidence. Guardiola's decision not to replace him with Bojan is quite surprising. He brought in Bojan in the 90th minute as if to make fun of him. I always have spoken against Guardiola's tactic of seeing substitution as a time ewasting tactic only. Bojan should have been brought in earlier, when Ibra was struggling infront of goal. The only message Guardiola manages to send to Bojan is "Whatever is the situation, you are not good enough".

Sporting Gijon vs Barca Preview
Valdes is a certaining at the goal. With Alves injury, Puyol is expected to play the right back role. The centre defense should see pairing of Milito and Pique together. Maxwell might be selected ahead of Abidal. Xavi and Iniesta is destined to run the midfield. But all eyes will be on who will play the defensive midfielder role. But going with Gaurdiola there is no doubt that Busquets will be pickled ahead of Toure. Gijon won't be a great opponent especially in dominating midfield and I don't expect Guadiola to give Toure a chance to perform as a good performance from Toure may put pressure on Busquets. The front three might see a change tonight with Pedro replacing Henry on the left along with Messi. But Ibra is expected to hold his place. Once agains we may have to depend on Messi, Iniesta and Xavi trio to see us through this match. It is not a abd thing but this will be a good time for Ibra tio get back to form. I predict a tight match but Barca emerging on top 0-0 in the end.

The Strange Saga of Victor Valdes and Spain
Victor Valdes is the best for Barca, but not good enough for Spain?
It is quite strange that when majority of the National teams in the world is struggling for a quality option in the goal, Spain is blessed with four of them( all of the same age group). I saw a comment somewhere with an English fans asking whether is there any chance of Valdes being eligible for playing in English side, quite funny. Valdes always was considered as a good goal keeper who is regularly error prone. He had a habit of throwing the ball to the wrong person, especially when Torres was in Atletico Madrid . He is also not that brilliant in air. But for all his drawbacks, he remains a better option than many of his competitors. He is undoubtedly is the best when it comes to one on one situation. The likes of Iker, Buffon, Cech may be better than him but in the rest of the pack Valdes really stands out. Valdes has impressed everyone with his consistent performance in this season. Actually his performance had made the Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque to take notice. Vicente del Bosque did not hide the dilemma he is facing when he said that "Valdes has earned the place but may not get the call".
Victor Valdes is probably the World's best when it comes to one on one
To an extent Barca's style of playing has been the bane for Valdes. We always remembered the moments when his mistakes gave goals to opponents - like giving the ball to Torres couple of season ago, or like giving the ball to Pena in last season or misjudging the trajectory of the ball in the defat against Rubin Kazan the list goes on. But we all always tempt to forget his performnce in crucial matches. He has a habit of pulling out the unexpected in big matches. Champions League final in Paris saw Valdes denying Henry from point blank range twice when the team was a goal behind. Had one of that gone in, it would have been over for Barca. But we all remember the goals from Eto'o and Belleti from that match. Last season when Madrid visited Camp Nou - Valdes was there again to deny Drenthe in a one on one situation. Recently against Valladoid he once again showed how good he is. FC Barcelona's defense always play a high line and because of that Valdes on most occasion is left alone to deal with most dangers.
Valdes recently had expressed his wish to feature in the Spanish National squad. After two really good season, he may right to demand a place. But the problem is that niether Lopez nor Reina is doing bad. Now that's a tough call for Vicente to make. Usually you replace a player from the squad when they are under-performing or some exceptional talent is knocking the door who will regularly make the first eleven. Eventhough Reina has not been anywhere near last season's form he still might hold to the second choice position and Diego Lopez also is not doing bad. With Iker present in the squad, he will always be the Numero Uno and above all he is the captain of the side. Valdes' recent performance does demand Vicente to replace Lopez with him in the squad. But at this moment del Bosque looks unwilling to take such a decision. So with all due respect to Valdes' performnace and skill, I would be surprised to see him making the squad this season. Maybe I will be delightfully proved wrong when the squad is announced - always unexpected things happen in football.

Tottenham Fulham score - Spurs 2 Fulham 0
Both London sides started brightly with Zamora taking up good positions against the Spurs back four and Modric dictating alot of the Tottenham possession. If anything though it was the home team that looked dangerous, with Damien Duff making things difficult for Corluka down the left flank. Zamora had a big chance but fluffed it; a big moment in the 1st half for the former Spur who had passed a late fitness test after recovering from a broken collarbone.
Un the 27th minute Peter Crouch used his height to open the scoring, nodding a left footed David Bentley cross from the right hand side as he cut inside. A neat header but a possible lack of judgement from Fulham 'keeper Schwarzer as he came some length for the cross. Then Modric battled to get the original looping header back to Crouch who poked the ball into the net. A good 45 minutes for ex-Blackburn Rovers player David Bentley who was deputising for the pacey Aaron Lennon. Bentley seemed to enjoy alot of space in the first half and looked pretty neat for the home side.
In the 45th minute Luca Modric had a great chance within the penalty area after some neat dribbling but blasted his shot just over the cross bar.
In the second half Tottenham Hotspur played smooth, attacking football, piling on the pressure to build on thier 1-0 lead. The goal came eventually with a deflected free kick from David Bentley. Unlucky for the away side but Spurs were definitely good for it, with the industry of Huddlestone/Palacios and Modric's wizardry in midfield.
For Tottenham, it was good to see the confidence gradually trickle back into both David Bentley and Gareth Bale. Dawson failed to get a header on target from a great Bentley cross and Bale tirelessly bombed up and down the left flank, looking every bit a Premier League quality wing back.
Fulham took Zamora off and he would have been dissapointed to get his goal at White Hart Lane. Fulham had some nice attacking moves in the last ten minutes and Redknapp took the decision to put on the athletic Robbie Keane in order to counter balance this possession.
The home side killed it to win 2-0 to get a great 3 points to fight off Liverpool from muscling the 4th position off them.
Ibrahmovic Has to Keep It Simple
The biggest criticism about Ibrahmovic is that he is trying too many fanciful stuffs. Many a times in matches you will see him unsuccessful trying the back flicks and stuffs when normal play would have been enough. He has been doing the same from the beginning of his Barca career and to his credit has produced some excellent results with those. But do you really need your centre forward to do these things or go for a straight assault on the goal. The problem with Ibrahmovic is that he is more talented that any of the usual centre striker. So we can't really blame him for trying these tricks in Barca's playing style. But there is no doubt that he is doing these more often than required. Things are going well for him till now but his form continue like this he would be forced to hear some unpleasant comments pretty soon. One factor which is in favour of Ibrahmovic is the overall performance of the team. While the team is doing well he will get enough time to get back to form as no one will notice his sudden drop of form. Time I believe is in Ibrahmovic side but he would do a world of good by keeping his game simple till he hits great form. If he keeps it simple the likes of Messi, Iniesta and Xavi will deliver him huge number of goal scoring oppurtunities for him.
Guardiola's decision not to give Bojan much time will also work well for Ibrahmovic. In the last 3 - 4 matches in which Ibra has been below par, Guardiola never tried to give Bojan more time. That shows that Guardiola is ready to wait for his striker to regain his form. To his dis-advantage, Bojan also failed to take advantage of any opputunities given to him. Then it is harsh to criticise him as he never gets to play more than one match in a row. Pedro has been more effective and lucky this season and it reminds of Giovani's plight in his first season when Bojan was scoring all those goals. Only difference is Bojan is in the receiving end of fortune now. With Bojan out of selection we have only one option in the centre forward position and that is Zlatan Ibrahmovic. So it will be necessary for Barca's title hopes, especially in Champions League to have their centre striker in full flow.

Does Wenger's selection mean another trophyless season for the Gooners?
While most of Arsenal's first team were rested to concentrate on the league, Wenger's second choice selection of young talent plus former legend Sol Campbell crashed out of the FA cup at the Britannia Stadium yesterday. Although at 67 minutes and at 1:1 Wenger brought on the big guns of Arshavin and Eduardo plus the talented youngster Aaron Ramsey, this triple change was too little, too late. Ironically Stoke, who played well throughout and deserved their win, played even better after Wenger's change. The Arsenal manager had wanted to avoid a replay but got his wish granted somewhat differently than he had hoped when Fuller whacked in a second goal for the home team and Etherington got the third.
Many Gooners are bemoaning Wenger's team choice as they saw the cup competition as Arsenal's best chance of winning silverware this year. However as I wrote last week, I believe Arsenal do still have a reasonable chance of winning the league this year if they can continue their unbeaten run through their next few fixtures. In the next couple of weeks Arsenal are playing Villa, Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool and understandably Wenger did not want to add to his injury list for this challenging run in. These tough choices around team selection are unfortunately the reality for clubs who don't have owners with deep deep pockets.
Plus although the FA Cup is a great competition, winning the Premiership is a far superior prize. It was only 2 years ago that Portsmouth won the cup but have been pretty much in freefall since. This year Man United and Liverpool are already missing from the competition, which in my view would devalue the win somewhat (unless of course you are a Leeds fan)! So in my view Wenger did the right thing by resting his first team, although I am not convinced that Sol Campbell is the answer to Arsenal's defensive problems!

Tevez and Neville - sort yourselves out!
ALL OF US!
Carlos Tevez and Gary Neville have lacked class and taste with their recent spate of name calling in the media. In my 2nd favourite sport, cricket, you would not win any friends from such vocal behaviour and indeed would compromise your position long term.
I would love football to have more honour and respect in it - both on the field and off of the pitch. Surely the two are intrinsically linked. As football has become progressively non-contact, I think the pent-up anger in the stands has got worse in some ways. As a spectacle football is ahead of both cricket and rugby in terms of popularity but lots of parents that look to take their kids to sporting events will shy away from subjecting them to a barrage of swearing and friction between opposing fans and assault slinging towards prima donnas like Tevez and Neville.
Do footballers take their positions seriously enough? Their actions have a huge influence on millions of football enthusiast youngsters.
Grow up chaps.
FC Barcelona Register Club Record; Valladoid - 0, Barca - 3
The final result may not be an ideal indication to how the game started. The games started with Valladoid dominating the play slightly. The first shot of the match fell to Valladoid from a free kick in the fifth minute; Canobbio fired a powerful left foot shot but Valdes was alert to punch the ball away. Barca's first chance came in the 8th minute when Keita headed over from a Xavi corner. In the 11th minute Alves laid back the ball to Messi's path with a superb back-heel but Messi's curling shot was saved by goal keeper Villar . In the 18th minute Valdes produced a good one hand save to deny Diego Costa after Pique gave the ball away. In the 20th minute Messi set Alves off down the right, Alves sent in a great cross into the box, which was superbly volleyed into goal by Xavi to give Barca the lead. Within two minutes Barca extended the lead when Alves's supposed cross to the centre went straight into the far corner. The smile at Alves face proved that he really intended to cross the ball to Ibrahmovic, but no one was complaining. That two goals took the fizz out of the early Valladoid challenge. In the 44th minute Borja slammed great free kick staright at Valdes who did well to block and Barca were able to clear any danger off the rebound.
The second half saw Barca take full control of the proceeding. In the 55th minute Iniesta showed great skill get away from his marker but he shot straight at Villar. In the 56th minute Iniesta played the ball to Alves on the right whose cross into the middle was met with a spectacular bi-cycle kick from Henry. But Villar was able to produce the save to deny henry. In the same minte Messi made it 3-0 with a neat finish from a Ibrahmovic pass. With that goal Messi has moved one goal ahead of Villa in pichichi list. In the 59th minute Valdes did well to save a downward header and preserve Barca's three goal advantage. In the 62nd minute Gaurdiola replaced Pique with Milito. In the 64th minute Iniesta played the ball to Henry who drove forward and shot. but Villar was able to catch the ball. The next minute it was Messi who broke down the left but his shot went wide. In the 70th minute Messi fought off the ball from three Valladoid playes and rushed forward before playing the ball to Ibra on the right but his shot was saved by Villar. Towards the end Guardiola brought in Chygrynskiy for keita and Bojan for Henry.
The game might not have started brightly for Barca but they did well to take control of the game and make it look easy. Valdes produced three fine save and totally deserved the clean sheet. He has been looking fine in last couple of matches. This is Barca's third consecutive victory with a margin of three goals or more. The best thing is that we have been able to do it without Henry and Ibrahmovic coming into any kind of form. Both of their performance has been average. The player of the match was Dani Alves, who had his hand in all the goals. He was simply unstoppable from that right flank. Puyol was also in top form diving everywhere and cutting all the dangers. Messi is continuing his great form and was again the driving force in all Barca moves. The midfield duo of Iniesta and Xavi performed well throughout the match. The team looks good and we have to hit top form before Champions League commences.
