Preview Match : Title chasers Real Madrid will welcome Real Sociedad to the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday evening. Canales is finally back on the squad list after being left off for some weeks due to injury as well as a coaching decision. Both, Ramos and Pedro Léon will be forced to watch from the stands, as the former is suspended while the latter was left off due to the coach's decision. When these two teams met back in September in week three of the league, Real Madrid escaped the Anoeta with a marginal 2-1 victory and were perhaps very fortunate to come away with all points- after all it was a very lackluster performance from the whites. A spectacular goal from Di María gave Los Blancos the lead against the Basques but that goal was later cancelled out by Raúl Tamudo with a real poacher's effort. However, it took a late goal by Ronaldo (may have been Pepe, as Ronaldo's shot might have taken a slight deflection off the center back) to hand Real Madrid the victory.

Real Madrid have been superb at home, winning ten out of their ten games at the Bernabéu. Even more impressive is the brilliant 146 games unbeaten home record that coach Mourinho has in league spanning over a nine year period- his last and only home loss occuring February 23, 2002 when his Porto side were defeated 3-2 by Beira-Mar. The home side will be keen on keeping the boss' streak alive, as well, continue their stronghold at the Bernabéu. Additionally, a win is paramount for the hosts if they are to remain hopeful of winning the league this season and keeping pace with leaders Barcelona. Also, to avoid further embarrassment, after that loss last weekend to an inferior Osasuna team.

Interestingly, Real Sociedad have only won four of their 66 competitive games at the Bernabéu. Their last victory coming on the final day of the season in the 2003-04 season, embarrassing the host team 4-1 - a brace from Xabi Prieto and one a piece from Kovacevic and De Paula were enough for the away side on the night with Figo grabbing a consolation goal from the penalty spot for the whites.

Real Sociedad's last visit to the Bernabéu was in the 2006-07, where the two met on match day three winning 2-0 with goals by Beckham and Reyes in the 69th and 89th minute respectively. Casillas and Ramos are the only players from that day to still be a part of the current Real Madrid squad. While, Real Sociedad's Labaka, Aranburu, Xabi Prieto and Rivas are the only players still with the team from that last meeting. A similar margin of victory will suffice for the hosts on Sunday, especially since our cross-town rivals, Atlético Madrid have once again displayed their willingness to sabotage us by succumbing to yet another defeat in the Camp Nou on Saturday evening.

FC Barcelona - 3, Atletico Madrid - 0

FC Barcelona moved ten points clear of Real Madrid with a 3-0 win against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou. With this this side has broken the long standing record of most consecutive victories in La Liga. What makes it more sweet was the fact that it was held by that legendary Real Madrid side of Alfred Di Stefano. On an historic night Lionel Messi was the hero, notching up yet another hat-trick. Guardiola had Alves, Abidal, Pique and Maxwell in the defense. Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets formed the midfield and Villa, Messi and Pedro made the attacking trio.

David Villa had our first shot of the night when he sent an attempted volley way high of the goal. We were having the lion share of posession but surprisingly was creating very little in terms of clear cut chances. BUt then in the 17th minute as been the case of whole season, Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Barca. He cut inside at the edgeof the box, three defenders got into each others way and Messi made no mistake with the finish. In the very next minute David Villa had a brilliant shot hitting teh side-netting. In the 20th minute Messi was put through by Alves, but Messi went for a extravagant curler, which failed to curl. In the 26th minute De Gea stopped Pedro from scoring from another great reverse pass by Alves.

In the 28th minute Messi had the second of the night. The build up was pretty much scrappy, Villa's attempt to find Messi was not properly dealt with the defense and Messi made no mistake. In the 42nd minute Aguero danced into our box got past three defenders but Abidal was at hand to block of his final shot. The very next minute Villa had another shot whistling past the post. The first half ended with we compltely dominating but still not playing in full form. Aguerro did troubled our defense a couple of times, but he was missing his strike partner Forlan.

Atletico Madrid came out much determined in the second half and was dominating the early exchanges. In the 52nd minute Atletico had a great chance but Pique cleared it off the line. The arrival of Forlan after the half was causing us some serious trouble. In the 68th minute Messi's free kick from the edge of box was easily caught by the keeper. In the 73rd minute David de Gea produced a finger tip save to deny a brilliant header from Messi. In the 77th minute Pedro saw his shot from the edge of the box going just wide. In the 79th minute Lionel Messi completed his hat-trick. That was yet another scrappy finish. David Villa was played through by Messi, but Villa shot was blocked by the keeper but Messi slide into pounce on the rebound. Guardiola shortly took off Iniesta, Xavi and Pedro and brought in Keita, Afellay and Bojan.

It was yet another routine victory for the side. And we never got off third gear throughout the match. With the lead now swirling to ten points, there could be enormous pressure on Real Madrid. We were at times exposed by the aerial balls and speed of Atletico forwards. But that was more due to a bit of complacency creeping in this match. With a hat-trick on his name, Messi should be automatically considered for the Man of the Match. But the best Barca player on the pitch was Eric Abidal. He cut off every tiny bit of sniff Atletico had. Iniesta once again was pretty good in the midfield with his tricks in full display. Pedro and Busquets had some average game but still was efefctive.

Preview Match : FC Barcelona managed to open a seven-points gap from Real Madrid and it seems highly unlikely for anybody to defy Pep Guardiola's leadership of this tournament. Atletico has been a nightmare for FC Barcelona in the past, but the present is radically different, having lost three of the last four games.

Quique Sanchez Flores' Colchoneros are aware this week's visit to the Camp Nou is decisive to decide whether they've a chance of qualifying for next year's Europa League or not. The reigning European champion faced elimination in the first stage of the Europa League, a fatal blow to their self-confidence.

Atletico misses winger Luis Perea, Raul Garcia and Mario Suarez. Atletico's defenders will have to come up with a plan to stop Lio Messi, Pedro or Villa from reaching their goal, specially considering they've scored over 70 goals so far this season.

FC Barcelona recovers Andres Iniesta, essential for Barcelona to find a way to obtain their 16th consecutive Liga victory, a mark never reached before in the Spanish League. Carles Puyol and Jeffren Suarez are still struggling with injuries and won't be fully fit to perform.

Atletico cannot return home empty-handed for it'd mean they'll be left with almost no chances from qualifying for an European competition the next year, but the hosts will deploy their whole artillery against los Rojiblancos. Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan wield weapons of mass destruction, will this be enough for Atletico to stop FC Barcelona from breaking a new record?

(Video) : Osasuna shock Madrid (1-0)

Soccer Extreme : Real Madrid CF remain seven points adrift of Liga leaders FC Barcelona following a 1-0 loss at CA Osasuna.

Madrid, who had previously lost only one league game under José Mourinho – 5-0 at Barcelona in November – succumbed to Javier Camunas's cool finish past Iker Casillas on 62 minutes. That proved enough for Osasuna to record a first Liga victory in nine attempts and send them three points clear of the relegation zone.

Third-placed Villarreal CF are now just six points off Madrid, Giuseppe Rossi scoring the only goal on the stroke of half-time in their victory against RCD Espanyol. The Merengues's city rivals Club Atlético de Madrid also tasted defeat, losing 2-0 at home against Athletic Club. Gaizka Toquero struck both goals for Joaquín Caparrós's side, who are up to sixth, five points. (UEFA)

Preview Match : Real Madrid have a real task on their hands to catch Barcelona and it is a task that has been not made easy by the trip to Osasuna. Even though Osasuna lie in the 17th position in the Primera Division, they have always proved to be the thorn for Real Madrid. The four point gap between Barcelona and Real Madrid could be widened to seven points if Barcelona manages to win against Hercules on Saturday. Because of Osasuna's record against Real Madrid, a number of Real Madrid players have been speaking about the difficulty of the game. So, one can expect a pretty determined Madrid performance on Sunday.

The biggest worry for Osasuna at this time is not facing Real Madrid, but preventing themselves from slipping into the bottom three. The club recently was defeated in La Liga and that pushed them into the 17th position and more worryingly, a number of teams around them have started to pick up points. Osasuna’s defenders will be most likely be facing Emmanuel Adebayor instead of Karim Benzema after the Togo international was signed by Madrid, on-loan from Manchester City. Pepe and Gonzalo Higuain are the two biggest misses for José Mourinho's team at the moment.

Revenge Sweet Revenge - Herceules - 0, Barca - 3

FC Barcelona managed to extract a sweet revenge on Hercules CF with a 3-0 victory away from home. Yes, it was yet another record night. Now we have equalled the record for most consecutive wins in La Liga. A first half goal from Pedro and two late goals from Lionel Messi gave us the 15th consecutive victory of the season. Guardiola lined up a defense consisiting of Alves, Pique, Abidal and Maxwell. The midfield as expected had Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets. The front trio was the usual one containing Villa, Messi and Pedro. Royson Drenthe was left out of starting eleven for Hercules.

In the 4th minute Xavi Hernandez had our first shot after Messi laid off the ball to him. But the attempt went way wide of the far post. In the 8th minute Villa and Messi played a neat one - two but Messi's final shot from a very tight angle was easy for the keeper to save. In the 11th minute Messi dragged another shot wide of the post after Pedro latched onto some poor clearance from hercules defenders. In the 15th minute Pedro had his shot from the edge of box tipped over. The resultant corner was a heck of a moment inside Hercules box. Dani Alves danced inside the the box and found Busquets who could have and should have gone for the goal, instead tried to pass it to Messi giving time for Hercules to re-group. In the 21st minute we had the biggest scare of the night when Nelson Valdes managed to get at the end of a long ball and played the ball to Trezuguet, who failed to finish. Both of our centre-backs was sucked out of position by the long ball.

Half an hour gone we were struggling to create straight forward chances. We had some decent half chances but Hercules was defending like their lives depend on it. Lionel Messi was having one of the worst first half I have evr seen. His first touches were constantly deserting him and was quite ineffective. In the 41st minute Pedro send in a great ball from the right to Messi in the box, once again his first touch took the ball away from him. Had he controlled that, would have been the first goal. In the 43rd minute Pedro broke the deadloack when Xavi found him unmarked in the right side inside the box. The build up included both Messi and Iniesta trying to run inside the box, but the rebound went to xavi who picked Pedro perfectly. That goal could be one of the most important he scored this season.

In the 48th minute Villa cut inside on the edge of box but dragged the shot just wide of the near post. In the 50th minute Xavi saw his shot go wide from the edge of the box. Hercules was trying to utilize the height advantage of their two forwards - Trezeguet and Nelson Valdes, and it was kind of working also. In the 64th minute Pedro had a goal disallowed for offside. In the 68th minute Busquets played a delightful ball to Messi in the box, who turned well but put the ball just wide of the post. The very next minute he had another shot going wide. In the 76th minute Lionel Messi saw his great shot from the edge of box saved by the keeper. In the 82nd minute we had another scare when Maxwell took it wasy on the left, but Abidal did well to save the blues. In the 84th minute Villa wasted a great oppurtunity to seal the match whe he failed to control a great ball from Pedro on the break. In the 87th minute Messi finished off the match after skipping away from a number of challenges and then finishing it into the right corner. To that moment he had a very, very poor match. In the 89th minute Messi scored yet another. Messi as usual lost the ball inside the box, Nolito who came as a substitute a minute before picked the rebound and found Iniesta, who found Alves on the right who crossed into the box to find Messi.

This victory was quite a struggle for us. The tireless defending from Hercules made the night very difficult, but it was hugely contributed by a host of players having an average game. Messi despite scoring two goals was the worst of all the attacking players. Villa was missing, Iniesta had an On-Off game. Pedro was briliant, Abidal, Busquets and Pique was solid but the Man of the Mathc for me was Xavi Hernandez. I have to admit that this victory gave me so much pleasure. Not because it was kind of revenge, not because Real Madrid was really banking on this match, because this was a match which resembled a surgical operation being performed. We kept on hitting again and again till we succeeded. So the pressure is back very much on Real Madrid, who has a seven point lead to catch up.

Lionel Messi fined €2000 for wishing his mother happy birthday (Photos/Video)

Soccer Extreme : Barcelona have submitted an appeal to the Competitions Committee after Lionel Messi was cautioned and handed a €2,000 (£1,725) fine for displaying a birthday message to his mother in the weekend win over Racing.

Messi slotted home a penalty kick in the win and lifted his jersey to reveal ‘Feliz Cumple, Mami’ - ‘Happy Birthday, Mum’ - to the crowd and television cameras.

However, this has been deemed to be an over-exuberant celebration and the Argentine was retrospectively handed the fine and associated booking.

The Nou Camp club have however decided to contest the decision on the basis that the 23-year-old’s celebration was not offensive or inflammatory, and promoted a positive social message such as family values.

Barca are confident that there is a precedent set, with Espanyol attacker Jose Callejon’s initial penalty for revealing a tribute message to late colleague Daniel Jarque last September eventually being quashed. (metro)

Preview Match (totalbarca) : The semifinals of the Copa del Rey are here and we’re one step away from the first El Clasico contested in the tournament since 1997. All that stands between Barca fulfilling their side of the bargain is UD Almeria, a small Andalucian club who lost 8-0 when the Blaugrana came to their grounds at the Estadio Benito Vaillamarin, in November. If one were prone to presumptions, one might already be making plans for the final on April 20. Barca did look just a touch more impressive during the last meeting. Frankly, we showed up at their place for dinner, kicked in the door, broke the windows with the power of our minds, and Almeria couldn’t do anything about it but hide in the closet. Not to mention that they have a serious relegation battle on their hands.

But trophies are not won by taking things for granted. And before judging a club on the strength of one match and their low place in the league, they deserve proper respect. They held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw a week ago, with a late Esteban Granero goal the only thing standing between them and taking all three points. And just like us, they’ve made it to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey. It’s no small feat, and they did it by beating Depor at the Riazor. This is the first time they’ve made it to this stage of the tournament, and you can imagine that this, along with their Real and Osasuna results, has created a tower of positivity at the club.

The prospect of facing a mentally healthy group of Andalucians from the top level of Spanish football trying to make it to their first Copa del Rey final shouldn’t be making any cules hungry for a big dinner. If Barca is going to make it to the final in April, it will have to be at its Muhammad Ali best: focused, graceful, confident, powerful and unwilling to get involved in a Vietnam-War-like conflict against an opponent looking to frustrate its well-known adversary through jungle warfare.

Preview Match : Real Madrid return to Copa del Rey action on Wednesday in what is the first leg of their semifinal tie against current champion, Sevilla.

It's the first Copa semifinal appearance in five years for Real Madrid, who have already eliminated Murcia, Levante and Atletico Madrid and hope to add Sevilla to the list. "It's going to be a tough match. Their fans always pour on the heat. It will be a pretty semifinal, but we need to score there," commented Casillas on the eve of the match.

Thursday's match doesn't only hold a lot of meaning for Sergio Ramos, who returns to his home town and former stomping grounds. Jose Mourinho also celebrates his 48th birthday and would like nothing more than his 25th win since taking over as head coach of Real Madrid.

With the Whites playing their eighth match this month, and because so much is riding on this particular game, all 22 available first teamers as well as Mejias will suit up in the Sanchez Pizjuan. Sami Khedira is among the squad members to travel having recovered from a bruised right ankle that prevented him from participating over the weekend against Mallorca.

Despite their inconistency in La Liga, Sevilla have been impeccable in Copa action. With Gregorio Manzano now at the helm, the Rojiblancos now resemble the team that won the title last year. In fact, they have won the Copa del Rey twice over the last four seasons.

Coming off a 3-0 win against Villarreal and a 4-1 victory against Levante, during which they scored seven goals, Sevilla are by no means an opponent to take lightly. Luis Fabiano appears to be back on track after earning a hat-trick over the weekend and will no doubt be the man to keep an eye on.

TEAM NEWS

Sevilla

Gregorio Manzano has named the same 18 players who featured at the weekend in his squad and has added Alexis and Lautaro Acosta to his panel. Ivica Dragutinovic is yet to return, though he is training fully now.

Real Madrid

Sami Khedira has been named in a 23-man panel for this fixture. Pepe, Jerzy Dudek and Gonzalo Higuain have all been ruled out because of injury.

Soccer Extreme : Mallorca La Liga Match Kick off time 19:00 CET at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu Madrid, Without Sami Khedira, Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid plays in great need of a victory to keep up with Barcelona's pace, once again the undisputable leader. Mallorca defines his future in this game, standing in the 10th position, a victory might let them reach the 6th position and get back on track for the European fight.

Michael Laudrup will have to do without Pau Cendros, Jonathan De Guzman, Joao Victor and Martí Crespí, greatly undermining Mallorca's offense. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona failed to defeat Mallorca in the first half of the tournament, and another tied game might leave Real Madrid far too behind on the chase for the title.

Lass Diarra will have another shot as Xabi Alonso's partner in the midfield, for German international Sami Khedira struggles with an injury that will keep him away from the fields at least for two weeks. Karim Benzema is likely to become the offensive lighthouse, ready to be fed by either Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria or Mesut Ozil.

"We must know Madrid is specially dangerous when they don't have control of the ball. The three players in the second line are deadly. When Ronaldo takes the ball and runs at over 70 milles per hour, there's little you can do to stop him" said Laudrup. Nullifying Xabi Alonso will be essential for Mallorca to have a shot for the three points, as the Spanish international holds the key to unlock Madrid's attack.

This game is likely to shake the very foundations of the top fight. There's much more in play than three points, it's a turning point for both squads. Who'll succeed at the Santiago Bernabeu?

Real Madrid has scored 42 points in the last 15 home matches. Real Madrid won in 14 home matches, 0 home matches played in a draw, and 1 home matches has been losers.

Mallorca has scored 43 points In the last 18 matches. Average 1.43 points per match. Mallorca won in 12 matches, 7 matches played in a draw, and 11 matches has been losers.

FC Barcelona - 3, Racing Santander - 0

FC Barcelona Strolled in to an easy victory against Racing

FC Barcelona started the second half of the season in the perfect style winning 3-0 against Racing Santander at the Camp Nou. This is FC Barcelona's 14th consecutive League victory equalling the record held by Rijkaard's Barcelona 2005-06 team. Pedro opened the scoring pretty early on the match, Messi and Iniesta completed the scoreline. Maxwell, Puyol, Abidal and Adriano made the back four. The midfield had the usual look of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. The front three was the usual Messi, Villa and Pedro.

It just took only a minute for us to go upfront. Pedro was the scorer. Messi and Villa palyed a great one - two and then Messi send in a chipped cross into centre, where Pedro had to do absolutely nothing. In the 10th minute Lionel Messi played Villa in on the left, but the Spanish striker could only shoot wide. In the 16th minute Racing striker Rosenberg had Valdes stretching to save a good shot after cutting inside Puyol. In the 28th minute there was total madness in Racing box. How on earth we didn't score is still baffles me. Messi, Puyol and Adriano all had shots which were saved somehow. In the 30th minute Messi send in Adriano through with a great pass but the keeper came out to block the shot. In the 32nd minute a great run inside the box won Barca a penalty kick, which Messi converted with ease. In the 41st minute the keeper dived well to save a Messi free kick. It was a great kick; it started curving from 2 metres outside of the post and was well in its way in. We should encourage Messi to take more and more free kicks. In the 44th minute Villa shot wide after being forced wide by the keeper and defense. The half ended with Valde pulling out a one handed save after an aerial ball exposed our defense.

Guardiola took off Puyol and brought in Pique at the start of second half. Racing santander came out more determined and we had a moment or two of some discomfort in the early exchanges. In the 56th minute Iniesta got onto teh score sheet taking the lead to 3-0 up. Villa played the ball from the left, Pedro played a beautiful back heel to Iniesta whose shot took a big deflection on to its way to back of net. That is Iniesta's seventh goal of the season, his highest in a single season. In the 68th minute Guardiola replaced xavi with keita. That was a very good decision considering his recent injury issues. In the 72nd minute Iniesta palyed a through ball to Villa but once again the keeper made the save. In the 79th minute Iniesta olayed a great ball to Maxwell whose croo into the centre unfortunately couldn't find anyone. In the 81st minute Bojan came in for Pedro.

We seriously never had to work hard for this victory. The early goal sealed the match for us and it was just the matter of by how many. If it wasn't for the Racing Santander's keeperTono, the scoreline could have been really embarrasing. Racing did expose us a couple of times with the aerial balls but Valdes was up to the challenge. Iniesta once again had an excellent night involving in every move. Villa should consider himself unlucky not to have got in to the score sheet. But he was very much involved in all moves. And that is a very good news. Every other player played their part to perfection. Messi is right now enjoying his play maker role to the fullest. Abidal once again impressed in the central defender role but he should not be moved out of the left side in crucial matches. We have moved seven points clear off Real Madrid now. Real has a chance to reduce it back to four but the pressure has to be enormous.

Preview Match : Pep Guardiola's boys are aware a sound victory will be the perfect remedy for midweek's defeat against Betis, the second one this season.

Racing's captain Pedro Munitis is banned from performing for the next two games, having been booked twice last week at Athletic's Cathedral. His absence will greatly diminish Racing Santander's offensive firepower.

At least midfielder Manuel Arana might return to the starting eleven for this clash, assuming the responsiblity of driving teams cruise in FC Barcelona.

Barcelona's coach Pep Guardiola knows that whatever doesn't kills you makes you stronger, and for that reason he believes the last game against Betis has left behind a positive impact on his team.

FC Barcelona has a busy schedule waiting ahead having yet to face Arsenal for the Champions League and Almeria for Copa del Rey semi-finals. Having scored 61 goals in 19 Liga games while conceding only 11, the visitors will have a tough nut to crack, will they succeed?

Preview Match : Atletico Madrid may live to regret conceding a late goal to Mesut Oezil during a hugely exciting Derbi madrileno at the Bernabeu last week. Los Colchoneros had stunned the Real Madrid crown by moving into a 1-0 advantage thanks to Diego Forlan, but their derby jitters ultimately got the better of them, losing goals from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo before the German’s late flourish gave Jose Mourinho’s men a 3-1 lead to protect on Wednesday night.

It’s been over a decade since los Rojiblancos tasted success over their great rivals, and incredibly it’s been nine meetings at the Vicente Calderon since los Blancos were last vanquished – the visitors winning seven of those matches. The weight of history is therefore on the shoulders of Quique Sanchez Flores’ side.

But there is more than simply history playing against Atleti. Recent form has meant that the former Benfica coach has come under intense scrutiny from above, leading him to comment prior to Monday’s Primera Division encounter against Mallorca that he felt he had two games to save his job.

In that regard, it’s so far so good for the ex-Real Madrid player. Els Barralets were dispatched 3-0 on Monday night, with Jose Antonio Reyes (pic) the pick of the outfield players, allowing los Colchoneros to move to sixth in the standings, albeit seven points behind the Champions League spots.

While a two goal deficit is far from ideal, an away goal gives Atleti a fighting chance of causing an upset and maintaining Sanchez Flores’ perfect record in two-legged ties since taking the helm of the capital side. (goal)

Johan Cruyff : Mourinho will never look for home-grown youth players

Johan Cruyff’s key points.

Is it any surprise that prompted Mourinho to ask for a new signing this winter rather than go for home-grown youths? Not me. It’s his philosophy. He is true to his own style.

I don’t know if Real Madrid will win some, a lot or nothing, but I know one thing: their coach wants to win something: whatever it is. That’s because they have brought him in just for that, and because of his prestige. So that is why he made the demand. If they don’t entertain his latest request – and that’s nothing new, on the contrary – he will always be able to say: “keep that in mind”, hiding behind the club’s decision, giving the excuse that he lacked a piece [of the jigsaw puzzle] to complete his work.

Is it any surprise the persistency on his part? Quite the contrary. He, better than anyone, can see what he has and what he lacks. And if he wanted another forward to fill in the position of a ‘9’, even when he already has Benzema and Higuain, his talk is unwavering in this regard and has not deviated one iota. The estimated down time of the Argentinean has reinforced his case in this matter. He made the request because he believes it is necessary and it has worked before – with Chelsea and Inter. Both clubs invested heavily and brought in a lot of people – with more players than necessary. This, combined with his talent as a coach, resulted in two very well made teams – [assembled according to] Mou’s style – in England as well as in Italy: never a small squad, big. And if he has to sign more during this early [transitional] period, he will sign.

Looking at the cantera

If it has worked well and has done more good than bad, it’s normal that he wants to continue with this line [of thinking]. This is what he was accustomed to: don’t go for home-grown youth players. It was not his business, because it has never been, and it would not be logical that he himself would propose it. If his job description, for now, is not to give youths the possibility of promotion to get them familiarised [with the Primera] in the medium and long term, less still is the chance that one will be promoted [to cover] for an urgency – they don’t merit an inclusion, let alone be the decider [of matches].

This goes back to the old argument of whether Madrid’s footballing base is not good enough, or if at the opposite end, that of Barca is simply better. The difference there lies with their first team coaches.

The base of a football club is only good if the first team coach utilizes it, and is bad, if not. It’s as simple as that. The football base of Barca is wonderful, yes [but] when in comes a coach tomorrow who looks at it with misgivings, who does not believe in it, it may go from wonderful to bad. And it’s just not possible that Madrid’s [canteranos] are that bad. One only have to look at the number of players who have gone through los Blancos youth system that are now part of Primera and Segunda teams. To the surprise of many, superior [in numbers] even to Barca canteranos.

No football base is that good or bad, in Barcelona or Madrid, but just first team coaches who believe in it or not. Barca has had two coaches in recent years, Rijkaard and Guardiola. In that same time frame (seven seasons) Madrid has had 10. Their obligations, from the onset, are exactly the same in the Camp Nou as it is in the Barnebeu: to win titles. The method used by them, is totally dissimilar, starting with the treatment and use of their respective youth players. Those of Barca, a week ago, are on top of the world.

The Ballon d’Or

The Ballon d’Or award has attracted controversy. That’s no surprise. That’s what happens when three are nominated and there’s only one award – an individual award given to a team sport. Everyone has their favourite. Me too: Xavi, and [all sort] of arguments on why any of the three should win it. The mess is in understanding the criteria on which period the vote is valid for and who to vote for [in that period]. No one can deny that Messi is the best, and the most spectacular. What’s missing is the criterion on how to make the selection. If they give it for the number of titles won, there lies the contradiction. The coach who won more took the award (Mourinho for best coach), [while] the player who won more did not even made it into the top three (Sneijder) – he won five titles with his club, got into the World Cup final, joint top scorer (tied with Forlan, Villa and Muller) and he’s not even one of the finalist. Yes he’s first among journalists, but was booted off the podium when national team coaches’ and captains’ votes were included.

Where some give priority to titles, others reward other equally or more important values, such as the influence a player can have within his team. And for most, the explosive display of the best player.

A new award

Given the dispersion of the criteria and the votes made, Platini recently announced that UEFA is creating its own Best Player of the Year award. That is to say, there will be one more thing that they have not taken into account – something that will precisely provoke more controversy: the weight of the World Federation (FIFA). And even with this categorizing, who should they give the 2010 award to? Messi or Sneijder?

The Result and All Goals Highlights : Real Betis 3 - 1 Barcelona

Soccer Extreme : Real Betis ended Barcelona's team-record unbeaten streak at 28 games with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night that didn't stop the Blaugrana from advancing to the Spanish King's Cup semifinals on 6-3 aggregate.

Having won the first leg 5-0 at home last week, Barcelona started just three regulars: forward Lionel Messi, midfielder Xavi Hernandez and defender Gerard Pique.

Betis, the second-division leader, built a 2-0 lead on goals by Jorge Molina in the second and seventh minutes. It was the first time Barcelona had trailed in a match since Oct. 16, when it rallied for a 2-1 league victory over Valencia.

Messi, the two-time FIFA player of the year, closed the gap in the 38th minute with his 32nd goal of the season, but Arturo "Arzu'' Garcia made it 3-1 in first-half injury time.

Messi had a chance to pull Barcelona within a goal again in the 54th minute but sent his penalty kick over the crossbar.

A day after coach Pep Guardiola's 40th birthday, Barcelona fell to 25-2-6 in all competitions this season, with its only other loss 2-0 at home to Hercules in the league on Sept. 11.

In the semifinals, Barcelona plays Almeria - a team it defeated 8-0 in the league this season. The other semifinal has defending champion Sevilla playing Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, which trails 3-1 going into Thursday's second leg. (sportsillustrated)

Preview : Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, “This is the best first leg result we have ever got from a cup tie, but if it was all decided, we wouldn’t be travelling”

“We are travelling out of respect for the opposition, who we imagined would be strong, but we have to be careful after the first leg because they have well founded arguments that they are going to cause us problems”

“I have ideas about the team. Against another team I might have used reserve players, but not against Betis no … It is not a game for relaxation or discharging anything. It is a fully-charged game in which we have to compete hard and play to win”

“We are not going to defend any result, but to win. It would be good for us to take it seriously … I hope that when they see the pictures I have to show them tomorrow, that they’ll realise just what we are up against”

“by competing as we have done until now … I’d like to feel at the end of the year that we have won things because we were the best … There is no guarantee that the second half of the season will be as good for us as the first was. If there is a team that still has lives, then that’s Madrid. It is great to have four more points than them, but there are 19 games still to play”

“We wanted to have a very close look closely at how capable he is of playing for us, and we now know he (Thiago) is. But there are more of us now that Afellay is here, and Thiago is too young to be sitting on the bench. I want him to play games … He is a very special player, unique in many ways … Whenever he has played for us he has given us something different”

FC Barcelona - 4, Malaga - 1

FC Barcelona took full advantage of Real Madrid slip

FC Barcelona won their 17th consecutive win of the season with a 4-1 demolition of Malaga at the Camp Nou. By doing so we have now moved four points clear of our arch-rival Real Madrid. Iniesta opened the scoring followed by Villa, Pedro and again Villa to complete the tally. With a four point lead Real Madrid needs help from some of their Liga rivals if they wish to catch Barca this season. But again that very much depend on us. We went into the game knowing that real Madrid has been held to a draw by bottom placed Almeria and it was a clear chance to increase the lead on top to four points. Guarddiola lined up with Puyol, Pique, Alves and Abidal. The midfield had Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. Messi, Pedro and Villa formed the front trio.

There were serious purpose in our playe from the begining. In the 4th minute Abidal shot wide of the goal, there was a good chance to find Messi in middle but he decided to take the shot. In the 8th minute Iniesta put us in the lead with a tremendous finish from the edge of the box. In the 15th minute Messi played a brilliant balk to Pedro on right but the keeper acrobaticall kept his shot out. In the 17th minute Xavi saw his shot come back off the bar. In the 18th minute David Villa made it 2-0. Busquets won the ball with a sliding tackle and the ball reached Messi who played a wonderful pass to Villa who made no mistake finishing it through keeper's leg. In 26th minute Alves was taken off and it kind of looked like an harmstring problem. That could be a big problem for us in the rest of season. In the 36th minute Pedro scored Barca's thrid of teh night. Once again Messi was the provider; Messi sent in a great ball to Iniesta putting him through on goal, Asenjo blocks Iniesta's effort but Pedro was there to slot home from the rebound. In the 42nd minute Asenjo denied Lionel Messi off his goal with a great save. The first half ended with a sense of anticipation for more goals as Messi was frantically searching to get his name on the list.

We took the foot off the pedal in the second half. In the 68th minute Duda scored for Barca from a free kick from outside of the box. We were in kind of a slumber and the crowd was singing passionately to wake them up. In the 74th minute a brilliant run from Pedro inside the box failed to find Busquets. But the very next minute Villa made it 4-1, after latching on to a good ball from Xavi. In the 81st minute Guardiola made the double chnage of Bojan and Afellay for Pedro and Iniesta. In the 90th minute Bojan wasted a good chance after some great work by Afellay on the left.

With Real Madrid failing to win our boys took that chance with both hands. the only blemish tonight was Messi's name missing from the score sheet. He could have increased his standing in Pichichi standing. The four point lead will quadrapule the pressure on Mourinho's boys and that is a very good news for us. We may have not been that sharp in the second half, but it was understandable as we went 3-0 up by the half time. Malaga's tactics at times looked like taking our players down. But we managed to get over their really bad intension. In doing so we have conjured some records of our own. We have now been undefeated in the last 28 matches. We have secured the maximum point by a team at the half way mark of the league. As far as the performance is concerned, Iniesta for me was the MOTM. Villa and Messi played really well, the latter looked a bit frustrated due to lack of goals. Xavi and Busquets were solid as usual and Puyol, our gladiator had a great night. Afellay in the ten minutes he got made a good impression and showed clearly that he was a smart buy. The only problem was the injury to Alves and we have to wait to know how bad it is.

Preview Match : Barcelona look as strong as ever. In the early stages of the season, Pep Guardiola’s side were questioned, with critics citing a lack of goals, not to mention surprising home slips against Hercules, who won at Camp Nou, and Mallorca, who earned a draw. Those days of late summer are now a long forgotten memory, with Barca powering away at the summit of the Primera Division.

Challenges difficult for normal teams are made to look easy by the Catalans. A cross-town trip to Espanyol looked a difficult match on paper, with los Periquitos boasting a perfect home record, but la Blaugrana claimed a 5-1 victory with seemingly impossible ease. And as for their goal scoring problems? Forty-three goals in 10 Liga matches answers that question.

It’s not only the excellence of this Barcelona side that is remarkable, their consistency and desire to produce that level on a regular basis is perhaps more so. Against Betis in the Copa del Rey, Guardiola’s men could easily have relaxed, perhaps asked for a rest, but it is telling that Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi struck a hat-trick against the Segunda side, with fellow nominees Xavi and Andres Iniesta also prominent.

There is little chance of Barca resting on their laurels for a Liga encounter against Malaga. By the time they kick off, la Blaugrana could be second in the standings, but they will approach the game with the same relish as ever.

Preview Match : Almeria may be labouring in the Primera Division’s relegation zone, but they will try to gleam confidence from their excellent run in the Copa del Rey prior to a difficult weekend fixture against the mighty Real Madrid.

Boasting just a sprinkling of points all season, Jose Luis Oltra’s side have little to be joyful about at present, though Thursday evening’s 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna does mean that they’re closing in on a semi-final berth in the national cup competition.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has singled out Almeria forward Pablo Piatti as their key threat

Oltra wasn’t pleased that his side failed to turn their midweek domination into goals. The hosts controlled much of the play and fashioned plenty of chances, but Juanma Ortiz’s strike 10 minutes before the break was their sole success.

“We were strong and didn't commit any defensive errors from which our opponents could have scored from,” he explained to the media. “We kept a clean sheet, and this is something I congratulate my players for.

"We have a goal to our name, but we could have finished the match with two or three in our favour. The tie is still open.”

Simply winning any game is a reason for cheer at the Estadio del Mediterraneo at present. Firmly anchored in the relegation zone, it would be astounding if they were to pick up maximum points at the weekend.

(Video) Villarreal see red over Mourinho reaction

Soccer Extreme : Following Kaka's fourth goal for Los Blancos, his first since returning from a long injury lay-off, Mourinho celebrated right in front of the Villarreal bench, actually in the Yellow Submarine technical area.

A host of Villarreal players reacted badly, including Cani who threw a bottle in the direction of the Special One and the visitors were infuriated right up until the final whistle. Cani was subsequently shown the red card by referee David Fernandez Borbalan.

Pictures : haha..nice troll action by Mourinho. The masta of provocation

In trademark style, The Special One had an excuse, as he explained in his post-match press conference: "I went to celebrate the goal with my son who was behind the visitors' bench, and the Villarreal players thought I was provoking them. I hope that when one swears on their son they believe you. I think this (situation) comes from a state of affairs where everything I do is always classed as negative."

Footage of Jose Mourinho winding up the Villarreal bench (& Cani throwing the water bottle) is on the video below. (goal)
