India vs Afghanistan Highlights | T20 World Cup
India has won the game quit Easily with a good performance from the Vijay, Afghanistan batted first but Could not Post a healthy score and India in replay got the Target in flying colors.
Afghanistan certainly weren't overawed, but struggled against short-pitched deliveries, losing five out of their eight wickets to bouncers. The Curse of Arsenal FC
From the time the knock-out stage format has emerged, I believe there is a bigger curse circulating in the Champions League. It is the "The Curse of Arsenal". From 2003-04, every team who knocked Arsenal out of the Champions league perished in the next round against the usual perception. FC barcelona in 2005-06 season was the only exception, but since they played Arsenal in the final, they luckily didn't had the next round. Many may calll it is a starnge coincidence. Just see these, In 2003-04, Chelsea knocked out Arsenal but failed against Monaco eventhough they played the second leg at home. In 2004-05 season it was the turn of Bayern Munich, who despite playing the second leg at home lost to Chelsea. 2005-06 was an exception as Arsenal made it to the final. In 2006-07 it was PSV Eindhoven's turn to experience the starnage effect of knocking out Arsenal, losing to Liverpool. In 2007-08 it was Liverpool who knocked out Arsenal but failed against Chelsea. And in last season, it was Manchester United who fell to Barcelona after defeatinf Arsenal. Isn't it too much of a coincidence.
None of these is an excuse to the way we played against Inter Milan at San Siro. But from next time onwards, I would prefer to play Arsenal only in the final not anytime earlier. Which of these two curse will end first in your opinion - "The Curse of Defending Champion" or the "The Curse of Arsenal FC"? Let's do a poll on that and have some fun.

Barca vs Inter Milan, Where it went Wrong?
Barca have themselves to Blame for the Champions League Exit
Now with Barca eliminated, the time has come to do a post-mortem of the tie. Does it serve any purpose? I don't know but still we needed to see what all things went wrong. As I said in my FC Barcelona vs Inter Milan Match Report, the semi-final tie was made difficult by Barca's incompetent performance at the San Siro. The truth was that FC Barcelona with the players and the coach were complacent on the night and that resulted in our semi-final exit. It is not the first time this is happening in this season and Guardiola definitely has to take a huge part of the blame. The Copa Del Rey exit also was due to the above mentioned reason. In that match we failed to recognise the danger a very gritty Sevilla side could pose at home. No realising that danger, Guardiola send in a side with most of the stars missing in the crucial home leg. We never were able to repair the damage done in the home leg. A closer look at the Champions League semi-final defeat also gives you the same picture. Guardiola failed to understand the advantage Barca had in playing at home in second leg. Instead for looking for a 1-0 or a 1-1 draw we went for the kill and got killed.
Is it fair to blame Guardiola alone for these exits?
Absolutely not. But as the person who is making the big decisions, it is natural that he will receive the bulk of criticism for any failures. Like the great saying goes "Success has many fathers, while failure is an orphan". Guardiola is into his third year in professional coaching and has a lot still to learn. He has come up as a man who constantly learns from his mistakes and let's all hope that these failures strengthen him as a coach. One of the major criticisms leveled on him is his insistence in playing certain players, regardless of their stature. It is not a secret that he favours Busquets as a defensive midfielder and it has not gone down well with many Barca fans, including myself. Busquets has been doing an excellent work so far, but I have always maintained that Toure is a different class and Busquets could struggle against defensively oriented teams. Looks like my fears did come true. In the system which we employ at Barca, the defensive midfielder is a very crucial role. With such a high line we need some one who is good defensively to take the pressure of the defense. Busquets is a better player going forward than Toure is, but what Barca really needs is a defensive minded midfielder. Overlooking him for the first leg at San Siro was a mistake of the same magnitude committed by Perez when he famously discarded Makelele as a non-essential entity.
Another huge point of contention was starting the match with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I have regualrly maintained after the loss at San Siro, that we need to start Ibrahimovic on the bench. It is not like that Ibrahimovic is to be blamed for the exit, actually the first 20 minutes he looked really good. But there is no disagreement that Ibrahimovic is not in sync with Barca's playing style yet. He will take more time to settle into this Barca side's rhythm. And in our style rhythm is everything. When the Eto'o-Ibra swap was made I was dead against the deal. Many, who favoured the deal, argued that he was better player (which i do agree) and he was a big match player, especially against dodgy defense. I have been following Zlatan for sometime and I can guarantee you that he mostly goes missing against dodgy defense. So it was better to start with Henry upfront and with a formation like 4-2-3-1.
I was a staunch opponent of the 4-2-3-1 formation against Arsenal whereas supported the same formation to be used against Inter Milan. Arsenal presented a different challenge with constant attacks from the wings and a 4-3-3 formation could have given more protection. But against a team like Inter, who has a host of defensive minded midfielders a 4-2-3-1 formation could have been handy. This formation maximises the impact of Messi as he is given a free roaming position in the center. How many times we saw Messi skipping past Inter players from the right but to be blocked by two more near the centre. Towards the end we played a similar formation and saw Messi and Xavi getting more room to work with.
Does Barca Need a Plan B?
The England based commentators and reporters have suddenly started to make a huge cry about "How Barca is lacking a Plan B". It is quite funny for me. They claim that the English sides always have a plan B and claim that is the reason for their success. Am I missing something here? If you take the last five seasons in Europe, Barca is the most successful team in Europe with two Champions League triumph. And we did all by playing football the way it should be played, the beautiful way. I don't have a problem with the defensive style of football, but it irritates me whenever the less talented defensive minded footballers claim that their style is the best. Ours is one of the rarest teams which combine success with style and beauty. So why abandon it? Every team has an identity. You don't ask Chelsea to play an attack minded football nor will you demand Manchester United to abandon their fast paced style. A team's style will be dictated by the available players and the manager. Look at Mourinho himself, he always convert his team into an efficient defensive unit. FC Barcelona has some of the stunning talents on earth and will play a style which complements their style. The England based media should always remember that it is the beautiful style which took us to an unprecedented six trophies in a year, it is the same style which took us beyond any English teams this season in UCL and almost (if that Bojan goal had stood or the Milito goal was rightly adjudged offside) took us to another final before hastily passing any judgment. Indeed we may need a bit more options out in attack and that should be Guardiola's point of concern this summer.
After having such a great last season, we were bound to have some disappointment. It will be a great injustice to consider what this team has achieved this season as a disappointment. Many teams would die to be in our position. Now the focus will fully shift to retaining the league title. But we have some tough opponents to negotiate and no more slip ups will be entertained.
FC Barcelona - 1, Inter Milan - 0
FC Barcelona knocked out by Inter despite the victory. Aggregate Barca - 2, Inter - 3
FC Barcelona's dream came of defending their Champions League crown at the home of their rivals came to an end after being knocked out byt Italian Champion Inter Milan. Inter Milan, who were reduced to 10 men for almost an hour following the dismissal of Motta, held firm in defense. FC Barcelona's attack struggled to find a way past the dodged defense of Inter for most of the match. The last ten minutes lived to the expectation where we had Pique scoring an absolutely brilliant goal, Bojan missing a sitting header before and also had a disallowed goal from Bojan. The disallowed goal was a bit harsh and if that had stood we would have been heading to Bernabeu now. In the build up to the match I argued about the importance of deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation, FC Barcelona vs Inter Milan Preview. But Guardiola stuck to the 4-3-3 formatuion and against my wish he also started with Ibraahimovic. But there were quite some surprises in the starting eleven. We saw a new central defensive pairing last night, with Toure and Pique playing at the heart of defense. Milito played the left back role while Alves was in his ususal right back role. The midfield had Busquets, Keita and Xavi. Messi and Pedro completed the attacking line up with Ibrahimovic.
FC Barcelona struggled to break the Inter defense
From the start it was clear that Inter was more interested in defending the lead. Toure and Pique cut off any small sniff Inter had in the name of counter attack. But the real problem for Barca was breaking the Inter defense. Pique had requested the fans to create an electrifying atmosphere. I have to say that they obliged and created the most terrifying atmosphere. Our first chance came in the 22nd minute when Ibrahimovic chested down an excellent Alves cross to Xavi but he couldn't control the ball and was easily crowded out. In the 23rd minute Alves send another great cross but this time Pedro volleyed it just wide. we needed one of those chance to go in. In the 28th minute Motta was sent off for a second yellow after shoving his hand on Busquets face. Busquets definitely made a meal of it, but there is no doubting that it was a bookable offence. After that Inter moved into ultra defensive mode. I believe Guardiola let go off a chance to take the initiative at this particular juncture. He should have changed the formation to 3-4-3 with Alves playing in the midfield. In the 32nd minute the magician Messi produced a brilliant moment. He moved inside the Inter defense and then curled the ball on to the far left corner, but Julia Caesar produce the save of the Tournament to deny it. In the 39th minute Alves laid off the ball to Ibra after breaking the offside trap but Walter Samuel flunged himself and got the block on Ibrahimovic's shot.
Being still held to a goalless draw saw barca becoming desperate in the second half. The strategy was to try a series of long range shgot but it never worked. Around the hour mark Guardiola brought in Bojan and Jeffren for Ibrahimovic and Busquets. Then it looked like Guardiola moving into a formation like the 4-2-3-1. In the 82nd minute Bojan had the chance of the match when he headed wide from a Messi cross. It was an open chance. Anyway the next minute Pique scored that wonderful goal. Messi laid the ball off to Xavi who send the ball to Pique who was constantly pushing forward; Pique was played on by Muntari. Pique did a 360 degree turn to lose both defender and Goal Keeper and finished calmly to prepare the game for a nerve wracking finish. The in the dying minutes of second half both Messia and Xavi tried shots from outside the box, but Julio Caesar was upto the task. In the 92nd minute every Barca fan thought that they have done a repeat of the last season Chelsea match. The ball bounced of Toure and fell to Bojan whose finish was brilliant that it deserved the goal, but was disallowed due to a Toure handball. A closer look at the replays suggest that the handball decision was a bit unfortunate, but have to give it to the referee as at the first look it looked like a definite handball. Had the goal stood it would have been all over for Inter.
I predicted a 2-0 victory for Barca and it almost happened. But looking it in the larger pitcure, the tie was lost at San Sior. Guardiola's decision of not using the allowed substitution and looking for a second goal in the first leg did come to haunt us. Credit should be given to Inter Milan for playing a near error-free game. We could blame the referee for the handball decision and some penalty appeals, but then somedays luck will not go your way. Messi had a better night than the one he had in San Siro but wasn't commanding enough. In the 4-3-3- formation he had to get past a host of huge defenders to make any impact at this Inter defense. After seeing Ibrahimovic's performance yesterday, I firmly believe that Guardiola should not have started with him. There were some good performances from the likes of Xavi, Pique and Toure but that wasn't good enough for Barca and we definitely missed Iniesta. Now the team has to pick up from this disappintment ASAP and prepare for retaining the La Liga title, which is going to be very tough.

FC Barcelona vs Inter Milan Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg Preview
FC Barcelona needs to Produce a Magical Night against Inter Milan
So, the stage is set of this all conquering FC Barcelona side to overcome one of the biggest challenges in last two years. After losing the first leg away 3-1 at San Siro, FC Barcelona have to do it all at Nou Camp now. A failure to do that will see the dream of retaining the Champions league crown at our rivals home ending. Many have pointed out that we need a miracle to go through to the final, but for me that is more of an exaggeration. What we really need is a solid, compact and a determined performance and we could be heading to Bernabeu. The last time Inter Milan visited Camp Nou we ended up winning the match comfortably - FC Barcelona - 2, Inter -0 . A repeat of the same performance will see us comfortably through to the final and that is the reason why I emphasized on a good compact performance rather than a miracle. No way this is going to be easy, but this FC Barcelona side has the talent to achieve that result even with the absence of Iniesta.
The last two Champions League matches at the Camp Nou ended with Barca winning comfortably against Stuttgart and Arsenal. Lionel Messi scored six of those goals in the total of wight for Barca. In those two matches Barca blew apart their opponents in the first half and such a first half performance is the need of the hour. This Inter Milan has improved by a lot from the last time they visited Nou Camp. They have the best central defense pairing in the whole of Europe at this moment in the form of Samuel and Lucio. Their defensive midfielder Cambiasso is surprising everyone with every match. All the credit should be given to Mourinho for turning this side into a very hard working compact side. Inter Milan will present a different challenge to Barca compared to the visits of Stuttgart and Arsenal. Out of all those three teams, Inter is the only side which is coming to Barcelona with the upper hand and clearly know that it for them to lose the semi-final.
Mind Games has already started in Both Camps
The major point of discussion to the build up of this game was about the startegy Mourinho will employ. Will he sit back by parking his players around the box or will he play a style similiar to the one employed at San Siro last week? The answer could be seen from a close look at the Chelsea vs Inter Milan second leg at the Stamford Bridge. In that match Mourinho surprised everyone deploying an attacking formation and pressing really hard especially in the first half. He may deploy a similiar strategy, trying to close down the space of FC Barcelona midfield. Sitting back may backfire if there is an early goal at the Camp Nou from Barca and Mourinho would be the first one to realise that danger. As I wrote in the earlier paragraph, FC Barcelona has to win this tie in the first half. A 0-0 at the half time would seriously make iot difficult, and from then on breaking Inter will be close to impossible.
The mind games have already begun at both the camps. It looks like the designated referee is the target of both the camp. The Belgian referee, Frank De Bleeckere is assigned this match. Before you go berserk yelling at UEFA for not assigning an official from the big leagues, let me tell you that Mr.Bleeckere has a very good reputation when it comes to big matches. He was the one who officiated our UEFA Super Cup victory over Shaktar Donetsk. The Inter President, Massimo Moratti has already blasted FC Barcelona management for putting pressure on the referee. Mourinho did say a few things about our club and players after the first leg, it was quite surprising that he never said a damn thing after the knockout stage matches. You all can be assured that the self claimed "Special One" will say a few more in the press conference before the match. The "Special One" has already started his mind games creating a freak injury scare of Sneijder and Maicon. It looks like the Barcelona based media camps have caught his bluff. I would be quite surprised (in a nice way) to see any of these players missing.
Guardiola's tactics will be closely monitored in the build up of this match. He did fail miserably to read the game at half time at San Siro and we cannot afford a repeat of the same. The first point of intereste will be the formation he would employ. I am not at all a big fan of the 4-2-3-1 formation, but have to agree that it could be the best against Inter Milan. There is not much room to manouvre in the defense for Guardiola. Carles Puyol is suspended for this leg. Milito and pique will form the central defense pairing with Alves on the right and Maxwell on left. Abidal would have been the ideal choice as left back, but still it is not clear whether he is fit and available. The choice of defensive midfielder to pair with xavi infront of defense raised some eyebrows at the San Siro. But it showed Guardiola's preference. He has favoured Busquets over Toure for most of the season, and the kid could not absorb his defense off any pressure nor create a stability for the attacking players at the San Siro. Toure could ideally be my choice simply because of his experience, physiscal presence and defensive capability. The midfield trio should be an ideal formation of Keita, Messi and Pedro with Henry upfront as the striker. Many may question my logic of leaving Ibrahimovic out. The reason is plain simple - We average more than three goals per match without Ibrahimovic and I believe that the reason is his lack of speed. For tomorrow's match I don't want a forward who can kill the speed of our moves but someone who cfan complement. Henry has a better experience in dealing with tough central defenders whereas Ibrahimovic goes missing in those encounters.
Barca players may have blamed the referee for last week debacle at San Siro, but they themselves should know that the major part of blame falls on them. Playesr like Busquets, Alves, Keita, Ibrahimovic were all way below par on the night. Alves and Busquets should stop falling down the moment the simplest of challenge is made. This match would be a test of character of this Barca side. Like Laporta said last week, a great comeback from behind victory could be the only thing this great Barca sides lacks at this moment. This is that moment. To do that the players have to play at their very best, staying strong and focussed throughout this match. There is no reason why barca can knock this Inter side out and I am predicting a 2-0 victory for Barca.

FC Barcelona - 3, Xerez - 1
FC Barcelona got back to winning ways with a nervous 3 - 1 win over bottom placed Xerez. It was not all comfortable aw was expected, Xerez did cause some nervous moments for our defense. In the end we took most of our chances, while they didn't and that showed in the scoreline. Real Madrid meanwhile won their match against Zaragoza to cut the lead on top back to one point. In last season Real Madrid were blown apart after the 6-2 drubbing, but this season they are still looking solid and will give us a huge challenge towards the end. This was one those rare night when all of our attacking players (who started the match) ended up in the scoresheet. Guardiola decided to give a number of regular starters some rest. Messi, Pique, Milito, Pedro and Busquets all started on the bench. The defense had Puyol, Marquez, Chygrinskiy and Maxwell. Toure, Xavi and Keita made up the midfield. Ibrahimovic, Henry and Jeffren formed the attacking line-up.
FC Barcelona started the first half poorly
We started teh first half very sluggishly.
Instead of an urge to finish of the game, we looked complacent in our attitude. Our first chance came in the 10th minute with Xavi sending a great ball to Henry but he shot staright at the keeper. Then in the 14th minute Jeffren put FC Barcelona 1-0 ahead with a great finish. Again it was Xavi who sent in a great ball putting Jeffren ahead, who despite slipping got past a defender and put the ball past keeper from the tightest of angle. Xerez managed to create a couple of scare in our goal, with Chygrinskiy being the main culprit in giving away the ball. In the 24th minute Toure played a good ball to Keita, who played it to Ibrahimovic, who unselfishly squared it to Henry to take Barca to 2-0. In the 25th minute Chygrinkiy's mistake gave Xerez their only goal of the night with Bermejo blasting the ball into the top near corner.
The second half saw FC Barcelona struggling again in the defense. Xerez had two good chances to equalise but luckily for us they couldn't take any of them. The first chance came when a non-sense Valdes clearance went straight to Armenteros but Valdes made up for that mistake with a good stop. The second chance also saw Valdes making another excellent save. Guardiola immediately brought in Messi and Pique for Jefren and Marquez. Then in the 56th minute Keita won the ball in the midfield, put it to Toure, who wonderfully knocked it past Victor Sanchez like Iniesta would have done and then run with the ball before squaring it to Ibrahimovic for a simple finish. At 3-1 the game was finished for Xerez. The game ended with a number of poor challenges from Xerez players, resulting in 2 red cards for them.
After two disappointing results, it was good to see FC Barcelona back on track. But I have to admit that the team looked a bit disorganised at time, especially defense. But with Pique and Milito coming against Inter Milan we shoudl do good. Toure was excelelnt in midfield along with Xavi. Toure now has put a strong case of starting against Inter Milan. The front three of Ibra, Henry and Jeffren never looked menancing eventhough all of them managed to get into the scoresheet. Jeffren showed the glimpse of talent he got, especially with that goal. Ibrahimovic and Henry had a decent night. Maxwell struggled on the left and it would be great if we had Abidal for Inter match. All in all it was a great result but may not have been the greatest of performance. It was also great to see the team wearing a special T-shirt after the match which read - "We will Try Our Best".
