Andres Iniesta, Our Own Sam

2010 Has Turned Into a Wonderful year for Andres Iniesta

What a wonderful year this Gentleman had! It started in a rather disappointing fashion missing most of the 2009-10 season, but now it all comes down to fate. It looks like somebody up above decided to get him rested so that he can do bigger things at the biggest stage of all. Going into the world cup Iniesta was meant to play the supporting cast. No one, I mean no one in their wildest dream imagined about him scripting the biggest triumph of his nation. Spain, a perenial under achiever in footballing history was catapulted into World Cup triumph by the one of the smallest of players. Iniesta may be small but he definitely got a big tough heart. Yes, I know that's only in the soccer field. You got some doubt, ask Cristiano Ronaldo. He picked up a fight with him in his first clasico and now it looks like that was the biggest mistake of his life. Remember the Pep push stuff that happened in the clasico. Everyone remembers Valdes getting under Ronaldo's skin during that incident, but watch carefully who started it all - Andres Iniesta.

Iniesta may have been a little bit naughty at times on the pitch, but off it he has been a true gentleman; something very rare among footballers these days. Many non-Barca fans find it difficult to accept this. The character of Anne Hathaway in "The Princess Diaries" says "My expectation in life is to be invisible". Sometimes you maight wonder that's the same with Iniesta. Before that goal at Stamford Bridge only Barca fans held him in high esteem but with following that goal with the great strike in South Africa, he is forced to be visible to the world. Even in that greatest moment of his life, he could never ceased to exist as our San Andres. Phill Ball explains it really well - "The incident was one of sport's great moments, I suspect. A football player, in the very moment of his apotheosis, with the eyes of the world's intensive focus on his greatest ever few seconds, suddenly shifted their attention from him to a man that few of the 700 million had even heard of - an act of selflessness surely unequalled in the history of sport and a wonderful example to the 'me' generation of how to behave". But my best Iniesta story is the one that is involved with that famous Stamford Bridge goal - Iniesta's Boot Raises 100,000 Euros . Many may ask what is special in that. He is not the first nor the last footballer who has stepped into help others. But there is a difference. We have seen many sport personality helping others in the past. But most of them do that to benifit a cause they support, or to help some of their fans. But in this case Javier's aunt's only request was to get the shirt signed. He could also have send them some photos. But Iniesta being Iniesta, send her very boots Iniesta was wearing when he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final. Do you still consider that as a rather usual act?

Little Man for the Bigger Occasions

Many opposition accuse Andres Iniesta for going down at the slightest of challenge. We Barca fans accuse him for not taking his chances at times, but not this season. Whiichever side you are; you won't be able to accuse him for going missing in the most importnat matches. He is one of those rare breeds of footballer who excels better when presented with a tougher challenge. Rewin back to 2005-06 Champions League final, Rijkaard started the match a bit defensive with resting Iniesta on the bench. Trailing 1-0 Rijkaard did the right thing by bringing him on after the break. Two seasons back his wonder strike took us to Rome, where he ran circles around the poor Manchester United midfielders. Apparently he was not fully fit that night. No wonder why Rooney went around declaring him the best player around. Have any doubt still, go back to that great night in South Africa. It was not only that he scored the most important goal of the night, he indeed was the best player on the pitch.

Iniesta is one of the most unappreciated stars in this Barcelona side. The work he does at most of the time gets over shadowed by Messi or Xavi. In plain comparision with Xavi he may find a bit wanting in the assit column. But we may be over looking a lot of facts in the search of mere statistics. We may be playing a 4-3-3 formation at most times, but once the match start we all know Xavi loves to drop deep and organise play from a bit comfortable area. Iniesta meanwhile will be playing the attacking midfielder taking on defenders with his quick feet. Iniesta's primary job is to make space for Xavi to play in those wonderful through balls. That's why I thing together they are the most brilliant midfield partnerships the world has ever seen - Xavi vs Iniesta. In that sense Iniesta is someone like the Samwise Gamgee from the The Lord of the Rings. Like Sam, he carries on doing his duty without expecting much appreciation from the much acclaimed football press or community. Maybe twenty years from now, many may not remember him and his contribution to the club. Everyone could be behind the Frodo's of the teams. But one thing is assured that the Frodo's of his team will never forget the great contribution of this great Little Sam.

Rooney plans to go into management

Soccer Extreme : Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney revealed on Friday that he is planning to go into management when he calls time on his playing career.

Rooney, 25, may only be approaching his prime as a player but the England international has already turned his thoughts to life after he hangs up his boots and he fancies his chances of succeeding as a manager.

Many of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's former stars have gone on to be successful managers, with the likes of Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes and Roy Keane all in charge of Premier League teams at various times since leaving Old Trafford.

In a MUTV interview, Rooney confirmed he has started to take his coaching badges and even insisted he would be happy to start his managerial career in the lower leagues.

"I would like to be a manager. That would be my ambition when I finish playing," Rooney said.

"You see the players who have played for Sir Alex and gone on to be good managers. I am hoping to do that one day.

"But I wouldn't like to follow the manager here, or start at an Everton or Manchester United.

"I want to learn something about the lower leagues and build a reputation that way rather than just jumping into a big club.

"It is not right if someone goes in and gets a big job with no experience. There are managers who have worked for years trying to get that."

Of course, United are hoping Rooney remains an invaluable member of Ferguson's squad for some time to come given he only recently signed a lucrative five-and-a-half-year contract extension.

Rooney, who also admitted he likes to relax before matches by listening to former Britain's Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle, concedes he was out of order to demand assurances about United's continued progress from Ferguson and chief executive David Gill before agreeing to stay at Old Trafford.

"I went to see the manager and David Gill and asked them for answers," he said.

"Now I realise it has nothing to do with me but I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for me to do.

"I got the answers in the end but looking back it was probably wrong of me to do that."

Rooney did not commit himself to United until after a visit from a hooded gang of around 30 to his plush mansion in Prestbury.

It was an alarming evening for Rooney, who could not even venture out to tell his "visitors" that agreement had already been reached.

"I looked out and saw 30 blokes with their hoods up. I wasn't going to invite them in for tea," he said.

"I understood some of the fans were disappointed and felt let down. But it was just one of those things I had to get right.

"Thankfully I have sorted it out now. I have made the right decision and made myself happy.

"But I didn't even think about where I was going to go. There was no way I would have gone to Manchester City and there was more chance of me going to City than Liverpool."

Rooney also reflected on England's "terrible" World Cup campaign and his attack on the national team's supporters immediately after the goalless draw with Algeria in Cape Town.

"The emotions were high because we weren't winning," he said.

"Our fans were booing after 10 minutes. That is what I was saying. It was disappointing." (AFP)

Jose Mourinho vs Paparazzi Again

Soccer Extreme : Jose Mourinho was filmed getting involved in a fracas with a lone photographer in Barajas airport in Madrid on Tuesday after the Real Madrid coach landed after a short trip with his family to New York.

Mourinho, who was accompanied with his wife and children as he returned to Spain, was far from amused when he saw paparazzi aiming their lenses at him and his loved-ones at they tried to get out the airport.

And the Special One almost lost his cool with one snapper in particular as the Real coach marched over with a threatening clenched fist, only to regain his composure once the rogue picture-taker had got the message.

According to Spanish press, Mourinho hit the photographers bag and confronted him saying These are my children!

Newcastle's Alan Pardew was upset Jose Enrique revealed an injury on Twitter

Soccer Extreme : The social network is proving a tangled web for one English soccer coach.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had hoped that an injury sidelining defender Jose Enrique wouldn't be disclosed until right before Tuesday's Premier League game against Tottenham.

But more than four hours before kickoff, the Spanish defender wrote in broken English on Twitter: "Sorry lads i have a test this morning and we decide is better dont play. ... Im so hungry because this game is nice to play. ... My hamstring is so stiff today."

Pardew, whose team lost 2-0, now wants his his players to withhold such revelations from social networking accounts. He acknowledges, however, that "it's difficult to police" and he won't impose an outright ban.

"I got a text message that the press knew," Pardew said. "Did he tweet it, did he? It's something as a club we need to look at. Players can't be giving that sort of information out. ... We need to make it as a club policy that it has to stop."

Asked if Enrique would be ready for Sunday's match against West Ham, Pardew cracked: "I'll check his tweet."

He may have been a bit late. Enrique already provided an update for his more than 5,000 followers.

"Im sure is ok for sunday because is just stiff nothing worse," he tweeted. "Thanks everyone for your support."

Pardew's annoyance must have reached Enrique. The messages were subsequently deleted from his feed.

"Sorry i want to delete twetter just get me problems," he explained on his feed. (sportsillustrated)

Pacquiao Named Stories that Changed Our World in 2010

Soccer Extreme : Manny Pacquiao continues to reap international recognition, with CNNGo.com, CNN’s Asian travel guide website, including his congressional win in last May’s Philippine presidential elections among the 20 stories that changed our world in 2010.

Pacquiao placed 19th in a list that included the India cricket scandal, the Hong Kong tourists killed in the Manila bus tragedy, the Commonwealth Games failure in New Delhi, Korea military hostilities, and the almost year-long Red Shirts protest in Thailand.

"The fighter of the last decade could be the politician of the next," it said in the story.

Pacquiao, in his second run at public office, knocked out Roy Chiongbian, the candidate that the powerful Chiongbian political clan chose to match up against the Filipino boxing legend for the lone congressional seat in Sarangani province in the May 2010 elections.

Pacquiao began his congressional duties in June, but requested for a two-month-long leave to train for his fight against Antonio Margarito last November.

The eight-division world champion also topped SportsIllustrated.com’s top boxing stories of 2010.

"Already boxing's most exciting fighter, Pacquiao became a global phenomeon in 2010, penetrating the American sporting mainstream like no Asian-born athlete in history," wrote Bryan Armen Graham.

Graham said that aside from winning nearly half of boxing’s 17 weight divisions, Pacquiao was also featured in 60 Minutes almost a year after being included in Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

Pacquiao also earned the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) 2009 Fighter of the Year and Fighter of the Decade awards, and scored dominating victories against Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito this year.

For winning the 154-pound World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight strap, Pacquiao became the first boxer ever to win eight world titles in eight different weight classes.

His other titles are 112 lbs (WBC flyweight), 122 (International Boxing Federation junior featherweight); 126 (The Ring featherweight), 130 (WBC super featherweight), 135 (WBC lightweight), 140 (The Ring junior welterweight) and 147 (WBO welterweight).

He is scheduled to defend his WBO welterweight title against former three-time world champion Shane Mosley on May 7 (gmanews)

Wigan 2-2 Arsenal Highlights Goals Video | 29 December 2010

In the midweek action of the Premier League we had three matches with Arsenal playing against Wigan Athletic at JJB stadium and it was the home side which took the early lead and things looked bad for Arseanl but they responded just before the first hal and made it 1-1 on the night.

While Nicolas Bendtner made it 2-1 just a minute before the break and the haltime team talk was made a little less important for Arsene Wnger. After the break it was Arsenal who looked a dangeros side and kept creating more chances.

You can watch the full match highlights here, Video of the goals are available while full match highlights can been seen here later.

Chelsea 1-0 Bolton Highlights Video | 29 December 2010

It was by far the most important game for Chelsea as they were coming into this match on the back of a poor result agaisnt Arsenal two days ago, and on a 6 games winless stream which was a huge cause of concerne for the manager and the fans alike.

FIrst half was a same old stroy for Chelsea, could not break the deadlock but it was their best player this season who have gone quite for the last few games scored to put them 1-0.

Wigan vs Arsenal Live Stream Online | 29 December 2010

Arsenal are now just 3 point behind leaders United in the league and with United dropping points last night against Birmingham City will give extra motivation to Arsenal who will be looking to go out there and win all three points in the league which would put them level on points with United although they would have a game in hand.

JJB is not a stadium which can be considered as ideal in this part of the season as the pitch tend to detiriat and it will kind of hurt Arsenal's passing movement and Wenger have complained many time in the past about the scenario and one thing si for sure if anything goes wrong for Arsenal in this one Wenger might put the blame on Pitch.

The Gunners are currently 3rd with 35 points with two games in hand while Wigan are 18th with only 19 points in the relegation zone. Mr. Arsene Wenger is likely to rotate his team with Chamakh, Arshavin and Sebastien Squillaci. Diaby or Rosicky will probably come in to replace the captain. However, is Nicklas Bendtner who will likely receive a big opportunity leading the attack against The Lactics.

Wigan coach Roberto Martinez welcomes the return of Honduran Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa after serving a one-match ban on Boxing Day. In their last match, Wigan defeated Wolverhampton 2-1 away from home. Regrettably, Franco di Santo (ankle) and Emmerson Boyce (hamstring) are still not available to come back due to injuries. Maybe Arsenal will look for a revenge to 2-1 defeat against Wigan on last season in April. However, The Gunners have won of their ten league clashes against Wigan. The Latics have only won twice at DW Stadium this season but are undefeated in their last 5 games at home.

Malaysia Winner AFF Cup Final, 2010

Soccer Extreme : Goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat saved an early penalty and Safee Sali netted his fifth goal of the tournament as Malaysia claimed the AFF Suzuki Cup title for the first time despite losing 2-1 to Indonesia in the second leg of final at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Wednesday.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Indonesia squandered an opportunity to cut the deficit when Firman Utina's weak spot kick in the 15th minute was stopped by Khairul. And the home team's hopes of rescuing the match were effectively snuffed out when Safee scored on the break nine minutes into the second half.

Mohammad Nasuha pulled back a goal with 18 minutes remaining and Muhammad Nasuha scored with a deflected effort two minutes from time to give the home side the win on the night although Malaysia still prevailed 4-2 on aggregate.

The Malaysians had lost their opening match of the tournament 5-1 to the Indonesians but they claimed the AFF Suzuki Cup by allowing only three goals in their last five games. Meanwhile, the Indonesians were left to rue yet another disappointing end to an AFF Suzuki Cup campaign as they lost in the final for a fourth time.

Both sides made two changes to their starting line-ups from the first leg. Arif Suyono replaced the suspended Oktovianus Maniani on the left of Indonesia's midfield while striker Irfan Bachdim was brought back in to replace Yongki Aribowo, who was ruled out with a knee injury.

For Malaysia, right-back Sabre Abu and right midfielder Ashari Samsuddin came in for the suspended Mahalli Jasuli and Amirulhadi Zainal.

The crowd, which included Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had filled every seat in the 85,000-capacity stadium nearly two hours before kick-off, hoping to roar their team on to the quick start that they needed to turn the tie around after their decisive loss in the first leg.

The home side's first real opportunity arrived in the 17th minute when a long free-kick by Zulkifli Syukur was flicked on by Cristain Gonzales to his strike partner Irfan Bachdim, who stabbed his effort from close range straight at the goalkeeper.

The Indonesians were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead two minutes later when Australian referee Peter Green awarded pointed to the penalty spot after spotting a handball by a Malaysian defender as several players went up for a high ball into the box.

Skipper Firman took responsibility for the penalty but his weak effort was easily saved by Khairul, who dived low to his left.

The Malaysians were a constant menace on the counter-attack and they nearly got the crucial away goal a minute later when Ashari Samsuddin received a pass from Norshahrul Idlan and went past the challenge of Hamka Hamzah before unleashing a fierce low drive that goalkeeper Markus Harison did well to parry.

On 25 minutes, a cross from the right by-line by Ridwan took a deflection off Malaysian defender Asraruddin Putra and looped up to the far post to Gonzales, who failed to put his header on target.

A minute later, a free-kick by Firman found Ridwan and Gonzales unmarked at the far post, but the pair appeared to get in each other's way and Gonzales headed over.

Two minutes before the break, the ball dropped to Gonzales on the left of the box but his effort from a narrow angle flew well over the crossbar.

And right before half-time, the Malaysians had to resort to some desperate defending to keep out an effort by Ridwan before Muslim Ahmad headed out a goal-bound effort from under his crossbar.

The Indonesians continued to force the issue after the break but despite dominating play, they were caught on the break in the 54th minute after giving away possession cheaply just inside their own half.

Norshahrul launched the ball forward to Safee, who outpaced the Indonesian defence before lashing the ball into the top left corner of the net for his tournament-leading fifth goal.

Needing five goals now to win the tie, Indonesia coach Alfred Riedl threw on Bambang Pamungkas and Eka Ramdani to replace Irfan and Firman.

The Malaysian continued to hold firm but their run of three clean sheets was finally ended in the 72nd minute when Khairul could only parry a shot by Bambang, which allowed Nasuha to put away the rebound, giving the home fans some renewed hope.

The Indonesian continued to press but could not manage another breakthrough until the 88th minute when Ridwan's shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off a Malaysian defender on its way past Khairul.

Bambang had a chance to net a third for the Indonesians in stoppage time but his free-kick was well saved by Khairul as the Malaysians easily hung on to claim the title.

Giant 'Gudel' Octopus Predicts Indonesia Win in AFF Cup Final

Soccer Extreme : Meet Gudel, a female giant Pacific octopus and a resident of Sea World in Ancol, North Jakarta.

Indonesia will meet Malaysia in the second leg of the final in Jakarta today, hoping to finally end its dry spell in Southeast Asia’s premier football competition.

Facing a 3-0 deficit after the Kuala Lumpur leg, Indonesia has to win big at Bung Karno Stadium if it wants to lift the cup after falling short in their three previous appearances at the finals.

Gudel, an acronym for 'gurita dewa laut' or 'king of the ocean octopus,' could help boost the spirits of Indonesian supporters, having picked Indonesia to win today's AFF Suzuki Cup final second leg.

Inspired by Paul the octopus, who became an international celebrity with his sharp predictions for Germany's games in this year's World Cup, SeaWorld put two jars inside Gudel's pen, one with an Indonesian flag and one with a Malaysian. Each jar contained a morsel of food.

The mollusk spent two hours going around the two jars, taking her time to study the jars. Finally, to the cheers of the spectators, she wrapped her tentacles around the jar with Indonesian flag. She did not budge despite the gamekeeper's persuasion.

SeaWorld's director, Sonny Widjanarko, said 18-month-old Gudel was taken from Hokkaido, Japan.

“Gudel just arrived today from Japan. She's the only occupant of the Giant Pacific Octopus aquarium,” Sonny said. (jakartaglobe)
