Extra time is required to determine the 2011 Asian Cup champion after Australia and Japan were deadlocked at 0-0 at the conclusion of regulation time in the final.
Harry Kewell had the best of Australia's chances, squandering clear-cut opportunities either side of half-time at the Khalifa Stadium in Qatar.
In the first half he lashed a flick-on from strike partner Tim Cahill high and wide of the target, and was thwarted by the trailing leg of Japan goalkeeper in the second half.
Eiji Kawashima was close to best-on-ground over the course of 90 minutes and Japan had him to thank for blocking Kewell with the pair one-on-one in the 71st minute.
