PREVIEW

Vietnam coach Henrique Calisto will send his side out aiming to score an early goal against Malaysia in the second leg of their AFF Suzuki Cup in Hanoi on Saturday night, but not at any price.

Calisto's team trail the Malaysia's 2-0 after the first leg in Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium on Wednesday evening and the Portuguese coach knows his team needs to make a quick start if they are to harbour hopes of continuing the defence of the title.

"We are going into the game to score as soon as possible and if we score early it will give my team more motivation," he said.

"But we can't just go out and attack. We must not play with our hearts but with our heads.

"Malaysia didn't play well against Indonesia, but they improved against Thailand and then again against Laos. They played their best 45 minutes in this tournament against us in Malaysia.

"They are improving game by game, so we can't just go out and attack too much because if Malaysia scores one goal we must score four goals. It must be a balanced game."

A full house of 40,000 fans will be in attendance at the My Dinh Stadium, with reports in Vietnam suggesting demand for the game was so strong that the organisers could have sold the venue out more than four times.

There will be little doubt that the Vietnamese fans will give their team their usual robust backing and Calisto is confident the enthusiastic support will give his team a lift, just as they did in the must-win against Singapore in the group stages.

"We already felt it in the game against Singapore and the support of the fans is really important for the morale of the players," he said. "This is not pressure.

"In the bad moments, if the fans don't support the players this is bad and sometimes it happens, but in Vietnam, until now, I haven't seen that.

"If we have a bad moment against Malaysia this is very important. But it doesn't put pressure on the players, it gives them confidence."

Despite his confidence, Calisto knows his side go into the game as the underdogs after giving the Malaysians a two-goal advantage with just 90 minutes remaining in the semi-finals.

"When the game starts, Malaysia are through to the final because they won 2-0 but we will see," he said.

"We know if we don't score two goals it's finished, so we must fight to score goals. Football is a beautiful game because anything can happen.

"We will respect ourselves and our fans. We know our target is difficult but it's not impossible." (affsuzuki)
