United agree fee for Liverpool midfielder

Newcastle United have today agreed a fee to sign Liverpool midfielder Danny Guthrie. The 21-year old spent the whole of last season on loan at fellow Premier League side Bolton, impressing Kevin Keegan during his spell at the Reebok Stadium.

Guthrie will now travel to Tyneside to open talks with Newcastle and a deal could be done as early as next week. The English midfielder has never really made an impression in the Liverpool first team since joining from Manchester United when he was 15 and manager Rafa Benitez has today to sell.

Liverpool's head of press Ian Cotton told the club's official website: "We have agreed a transfer fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Danny Guthrie. "We have now given Newcastle permission to speak directly with the player."I personally believe Newcastle should be looking at someone a bit better than Guthrie, with all due respect. At Bolton he was good, but not amazing and that was in a side that was nearly relagated.
