Safee Sali Signs For Persib Bandung

Soccer Extreme : Malaysian national striker Safee Sali has signed for Indonesian Super League side Persib Bandung.

The striker confirmed his departure from Selangor this week with the 27-year-old stating that his last match for his current club Selangor will be on 12 February.

“Everything will be clear on Monday when Selangor hold a press conference to announce my future. I’ve got my family’s consent about my next move,” said Safee.

Bandung club officials have visited the FA of Selangor office several times since Safee scored five goals to help Malaysia lift the AFF Suzuki Cup last December.

Selangor have agreed to release Safee from his contract which ends this November for an undisclosed fee with the player set to turn out for Bandung when the second half of the 2010-11 Indonesian Super League season starts on March 7.

The Indonesian club already have two foreign strikers in Brazilian Hilton Moreira and Argentine Pablo Frances on their books besides two Singaporeans, midfielder Shahril Ishak and defender Baihakki Khaizan.

“Where the national team is concerned, there should be no problems but that is a matter between FAM and my club. As for the J-League trial, I believe at my age it would not make sense to go on an attachment,” said Safee

“It would be better for a younger player to take my place.”

In the meantime, it is learned that two other Malaysian players – Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Khairul Fahmi – will attend trials with an unidentified Japanese club. (aseanfootball)

Lee Hendrie has moved in the Indonesian club Bandung FC

Soccer Extreme : The former Aston Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie has signed for Bandung FC in Indonesia's breakaway football league.

Hendrie, who spent a decade at the Premier League club from the mid-1990s and also had spells at Sheffield United, Stoke City and Blackpool, has signed a two-year deal and is expected to make his debut for the Javanese LPI club on Saturday.

"He will act as a link-man and second striker who will supply our forwards … his presence will give us a lift," said the Bandung chief executive, Mohamad Kusnaeni. "He will be a role model for other players at Bandung FC given his experience playing in the best league in the world."

Capped once by England during his Villa days, Hendrie became a free agent earlier this month when he was released from a short-term deal at League Two side Bradford City.

Bandung, second bottom of the league with two defeats after two matches, aim to use Hendrie's star appeal to boost the growth of talent at the club.

"As a [globally known] player, Lee Hendrie will be appointed our football ambassador for coaching grassroot and youth development players in Bandung," Kusnaeni said.

The LPI is an independent league launched this month, backed by the sports minister but not the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). The PSSI's official top flight competition is the 18-club Indonesia Super League (ISL).

The 19-team LPI includes three teams who switched from the ISL and is the brainchild of the oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro.

"The LPI is a reform league concept that meets with Fifa's direction 'For the Good of the Game' Task Force and AFC's Pro-League Committee," the league official Abi Hasantoso said. "The LPI was created to improve the achievements of national football."

Other notable players to have plied their trade on the archipelago include the Argentina World Cup winner Mario Kempes and the Cameroonian striker Roger Milla. (guardian)

Indonesian Football Player, Boaz Salossa Promoted to Dutch Club

Soccer Extreme : Striker Boaz Solossa Persipura Jayapura from Indonesia Super League, attractive football promoter Ruud JC Voll. Boaz, he argues, is potentially a decent player to play in the highest league in the Netherlands.

As quoted by Radio Netherlands Worldwide, on Wednesday (01/26/2011), promoter of the Indonesia-Netherlands bloody it is trying to facilitate the approach of Boaz with Eredivisie club VVV Venlo. And now, the club is studying the video appearance of Boaz.

Voll assess Boaz has VVV Venlo acuity is needed to lift the club out of relegation zone. Not only that, Boaz could be beneficial for the club inventasi if one day want to take it off.

VVV Venolo never bring Keisuke Honda in 2008 and then release it to CSKA Moscow with a fairly high price, 9 million euros. So even Nordin Amrabat who had joined the squad Andre Wetzel. Moroccan player was later released to PSV Eindhoven with the price doubled.

"Now we just wait for the VVV only. If interested then Boaz can just come and do a test. I do not wonder that Boaz could jump from Venlo to Ajax Amsterdam, or even to the Spanish league," he said.

PSSI Stands in Way of Signing Philippines Players

Soccer Extreme : The Indonesian Premier League’s Jakarta 1928 FC has been having a hard time signing up the Younghusband brothers of the Philippines.

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is making sure it won’t get any easier.

PSSI secretary general Nugraha Besoes on Thursday said he has contacted the Philippine Football Federation and asked it not to recognize the professional contract being offered by Jakarta 1928 to Philippine national team players Phil and James Younghusband.

“I explained all the developments in Indonesian football to [PFF president Mariano] Araneta and also about the illegal league,” Nugraha said, referring to the IPL.

“I told him that if the transfer goes through, it will be dangerous for both the PSSI and the PFF because we could be sanctioned by FIFA.

“I asked the PFF not to issue the International Transfer Certificate for both Younghusbands.”

Amid the launch of the IPL earlier this month which shook the domestic game, Nugraha said FIFA has assured its support for the PSSI during the Asian Football Confederation congress attended by Indonesia FA officials in Doha, Qatar last week.

“FIFA sent an official letter to PSSI, saying that we should comply with the FIFA Statutes and take firm action on all parties involved in the rogue league [IPL],” Nugraha said.

“And if the case continues, FIFA will discuss the matter during the FIFA annual congress on March 1,”

Nugraha also confirmed that the PSSI has given $150,000 to the PFF as the Philippines’s share from the ticket revenue during their AFF Cup semifinal “home game” held in Jakarta.

Jakarta 1928 is still waiting for a response from the Younghusbands regarding its offer, although the Jakarta Globe learned that the Filipino brothers were leaning toward turning down the deal.

In the Super League, promoted club Semen Padang went top of table after a 1-0 win over Pelita Jaya at Agus Salim Stadium, Padang, West Sumatra on Thursday.

Semen Padang has 20 points from nine games, just a point ahead of Persipura Jayapura which has two games in hand. (jakartaglobe)

Filipino Younghusband Brothers Set to Join Indonesia Primere League

Soccer Extreme : The Filipino football brothers who caught the eyes of Indonesian fans during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup last month are apparently set to become fixtures in Indonesian football.

Media reports on Tuesday said the Filipino-British brothers Philip and James Younghusband are likely to sign a deal this week with Jakarta 1928 FC, which is part of the newly formed Indonesia Premier League (IPL).

Jakarta 1928 officials are arriving in Manila on Wednesday for a possible contract signing, according to Franco Lorenzo, a member of the management team of the Philippine football team, who is negotiating for the Younghusbands, as reported by the Phillippine Daily Inquirer.

Lorenzo did not disclose contract terms, but said the Indonesian club was well enough financially to convince the brothers, who are graduates of the Chelsea Academy in London.

IPL, the upstart league challenging the supremacy of the PSSI-sanctioned Indonesian Super League, has also confirmed the news.

“Yes, IPL will help [Jakarta 1928 FC] because this is a premiere league and they are a new club,” IPL spokesperson Abi Hasantoso told news portal inilah.com.

“The IPL consortium will use all of its networks to develop the clubs and improve the quality of the league. The club has had its eyes set on the Younghusband brothers. And to have Philip and James here is one of the IPL consortium’s programs,” he continued.

The IPL debuted on Saturday with a match between Solo FC and Persema Malang at Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java. Oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro established the IPL in September, describing it as “the start of national football reform.”

Three of its 19 clubs — Persema Malang, Persibo Bojonegoro and PSM Makassar — are former ISL clubs, while the others are new.

The PSSI has faced heavy public criticism not only for incompetence but also alleged corruption. However, the PSSI has vowed not to recognize the league, going as far as saying it would impose harsh sanctions on players and clubs taking part in the “illegal” competition. (jakartaglobe)

Hans Michael Weiss for next Azkals coach.

Soccer Extreme : The mentor who led the Philippine National Football Team "Azkals" to the semifinals of the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup will no longer coach the Filipino booters this year.

According to ANC report on Saturday, Azkals team manager Dan Palami said British Coach Simon McMenemy's contract expired last December 31 2010 and out as Azkals coach.

“We have had discussion with Simon before, especially as he had yet to get his license for the different tournaments that we're going to participate in this coming year,”

The certificate Palami was referring to is the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coaching permit.

McMenemy feels ‘disrespected’

However, McMenemy claimed that he was not informed about his replacement as Azkals team coach.

In his tweet, the British coach lambasted the team management's lack of effort to communicate the decision directly to him.

@Simcm7 Football is a game of opinions and decisions are made for the good of the team. Your support should be behind the team going forward. S

Among those being strongly considered to replace McMenemy is German football coach Hans Michael Weiss.

Malaysia Winner AFF Cup Final, 2010

Soccer Extreme : Goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat saved an early penalty and Safee Sali netted his fifth goal of the tournament as Malaysia claimed the AFF Suzuki Cup title for the first time despite losing 2-1 to Indonesia in the second leg of final at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Wednesday.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Indonesia squandered an opportunity to cut the deficit when Firman Utina's weak spot kick in the 15th minute was stopped by Khairul. And the home team's hopes of rescuing the match were effectively snuffed out when Safee scored on the break nine minutes into the second half.

Mohammad Nasuha pulled back a goal with 18 minutes remaining and Muhammad Nasuha scored with a deflected effort two minutes from time to give the home side the win on the night although Malaysia still prevailed 4-2 on aggregate.

The Malaysians had lost their opening match of the tournament 5-1 to the Indonesians but they claimed the AFF Suzuki Cup by allowing only three goals in their last five games. Meanwhile, the Indonesians were left to rue yet another disappointing end to an AFF Suzuki Cup campaign as they lost in the final for a fourth time.

Both sides made two changes to their starting line-ups from the first leg. Arif Suyono replaced the suspended Oktovianus Maniani on the left of Indonesia's midfield while striker Irfan Bachdim was brought back in to replace Yongki Aribowo, who was ruled out with a knee injury.

For Malaysia, right-back Sabre Abu and right midfielder Ashari Samsuddin came in for the suspended Mahalli Jasuli and Amirulhadi Zainal.

The crowd, which included Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, had filled every seat in the 85,000-capacity stadium nearly two hours before kick-off, hoping to roar their team on to the quick start that they needed to turn the tie around after their decisive loss in the first leg.

The home side's first real opportunity arrived in the 17th minute when a long free-kick by Zulkifli Syukur was flicked on by Cristain Gonzales to his strike partner Irfan Bachdim, who stabbed his effort from close range straight at the goalkeeper.

The Indonesians were presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead two minutes later when Australian referee Peter Green awarded pointed to the penalty spot after spotting a handball by a Malaysian defender as several players went up for a high ball into the box.

Skipper Firman took responsibility for the penalty but his weak effort was easily saved by Khairul, who dived low to his left.

The Malaysians were a constant menace on the counter-attack and they nearly got the crucial away goal a minute later when Ashari Samsuddin received a pass from Norshahrul Idlan and went past the challenge of Hamka Hamzah before unleashing a fierce low drive that goalkeeper Markus Harison did well to parry.

On 25 minutes, a cross from the right by-line by Ridwan took a deflection off Malaysian defender Asraruddin Putra and looped up to the far post to Gonzales, who failed to put his header on target.

A minute later, a free-kick by Firman found Ridwan and Gonzales unmarked at the far post, but the pair appeared to get in each other's way and Gonzales headed over.

Two minutes before the break, the ball dropped to Gonzales on the left of the box but his effort from a narrow angle flew well over the crossbar.

And right before half-time, the Malaysians had to resort to some desperate defending to keep out an effort by Ridwan before Muslim Ahmad headed out a goal-bound effort from under his crossbar.

The Indonesians continued to force the issue after the break but despite dominating play, they were caught on the break in the 54th minute after giving away possession cheaply just inside their own half.

Norshahrul launched the ball forward to Safee, who outpaced the Indonesian defence before lashing the ball into the top left corner of the net for his tournament-leading fifth goal.

Needing five goals now to win the tie, Indonesia coach Alfred Riedl threw on Bambang Pamungkas and Eka Ramdani to replace Irfan and Firman.

The Malaysian continued to hold firm but their run of three clean sheets was finally ended in the 72nd minute when Khairul could only parry a shot by Bambang, which allowed Nasuha to put away the rebound, giving the home fans some renewed hope.

The Indonesian continued to press but could not manage another breakthrough until the 88th minute when Ridwan's shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off a Malaysian defender on its way past Khairul.

Bambang had a chance to net a third for the Indonesians in stoppage time but his free-kick was well saved by Khairul as the Malaysians easily hung on to claim the title.

Giant 'Gudel' Octopus Predicts Indonesia Win in AFF Cup Final

Soccer Extreme : Meet Gudel, a female giant Pacific octopus and a resident of Sea World in Ancol, North Jakarta.

Indonesia will meet Malaysia in the second leg of the final in Jakarta today, hoping to finally end its dry spell in Southeast Asia’s premier football competition.

Facing a 3-0 deficit after the Kuala Lumpur leg, Indonesia has to win big at Bung Karno Stadium if it wants to lift the cup after falling short in their three previous appearances at the finals.

Gudel, an acronym for 'gurita dewa laut' or 'king of the ocean octopus,' could help boost the spirits of Indonesian supporters, having picked Indonesia to win today's AFF Suzuki Cup final second leg.

Inspired by Paul the octopus, who became an international celebrity with his sharp predictions for Germany's games in this year's World Cup, SeaWorld put two jars inside Gudel's pen, one with an Indonesian flag and one with a Malaysian. Each jar contained a morsel of food.

The mollusk spent two hours going around the two jars, taking her time to study the jars. Finally, to the cheers of the spectators, she wrapped her tentacles around the jar with Indonesian flag. She did not budge despite the gamekeeper's persuasion.

SeaWorld's director, Sonny Widjanarko, said 18-month-old Gudel was taken from Hokkaido, Japan.

“Gudel just arrived today from Japan. She's the only occupant of the Giant Pacific Octopus aquarium,” Sonny said. (jakartaglobe)

(Video Highlights) AFF Suzuki Cup Final 1st Leg : Malaysia 3 - 0 Indonesia

Soccer Extreme : Malaysia picked up a handsome 3-0 win over arch rivals Indonesia in the first-leg of the final in the Suzuki Cup Asean Football Federation (AFF) Championships at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Sunday.

Mohd Safee Sali (pic, number 10) was the toast scoring a brace in the 60th and 73rd minutes while substitute Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin scored the other goal in the 67th minute to give Malaysia a comfortable three-goal cushion for the second-leg final at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Malaysia had lost to Indonesia in the opening Group A match 1-5 in Jakarta on Dec 1.

Indonesia players also had to deal with the crowd, who were pointing laser lights at goalkeeper Markus Harison.

Referee Toma Masaaki stopped the match in the 53rd minute, after Indonesia complained that the lights were being aimed at players while they tried to defend Malaysia’s free kick.

The game resumed after eight minutes.

Since the defeat the Malaysians have picked up momentum going three games undefeated - holding three-time winners Thailand (0-0), thrashing Laos (5-1) and knocking out defending champions Vietnam 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals last week.

Malaysia have never won the AFF series since the inaugural meet held in Singapore in 1996.

They made the final in 1996 but lost to Thailand 0-1. (globe/thestar)

Out of the 90,000 tickets sold by the Malaysian organizers, 15,000 tickets are available through the Indonesian Embassy for Merah Putih supporters.

By the time ticket counters opened at 9 a.m., many people had already been in line for four or five hours.

“I came here at dawn because I was afraid the tickets would sell out. Indonesians here are very enthusiastic to watch the match,” Andita Karmelina, an Indonesian student at Kebangsaan Malaysia University, told news portal Detik.com.

Andita bought 180 tickets for her friends in the Indonesian Students' Association.

“We will paint Bukit Jalil red,” she said.

Similar enthusiasm was shared by Tari, an Indonesian housewife living in Kuala Lumpur.

“I have to watch the final match. This is Indonesia against Malaysia,” she said.

Meanwhile, the district head of Kerinci in Jambi province, Murasman, issued an official advisory to the 6,000 Kerinci people who currently work in Malaysia encouraging them to watch the match live.

"Our district head has officially advised all Kerinci people in Malaysia to support the Indonesian football team 100 percent by watching the match at Bukit Jalil Stadium," district spokesperson Amri Swarta said, adding that Murasman is an avid football fan.

The Indonesian Embassy allows only five tickets per person unless the tickets are purchased on behalf of a group or organization. Ticket sales will be conducted until Sunday afternoon.

In Jakarta, thousands of people lined up in front of Bung Karno Stadium starting at 6 a.m. to buy tickets for the Jakarta leg of the final, which takes place next Wednesday. Ticket prices range from Rp 75,000 ($8) for the tribune section to Rp 1 million for VVIP class. (jakartaglobe)

Blame it on the Indonesian league, Singapore's exit from the AFF Suzuki Cup

Soccer Extreme : When the first batch of Lions - Noh Alam Shah (pic), Ridhuan Muhd, Baihakki Khaizan and Mustafic Fahrudin - moved from the S-League to the Indonesia Super League (ISL) last year, it was hoped that it would help improve the standard and boost the profile of Singapore football.

Has it?

Last year, national football coach Raddy Avramovic's answer was yes, it's a 'positive sign'.

'This is actually good for the national team. The players have a good challenge...this is a chance for them to build themselves up as professionals.'

More than a year on, and after failing to progress to the semi-finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time in eight years, the 61-year-old Serb doesn't seem so sure.

In the process of compiling data from the team's performance for the FAS, he didn't go into details but he told The New Paper: 'You were there, you can see it for yourself.'

And according to local football experts and informed sources, what they saw wasn't pretty.

Four more players - Precious Emuejeraye, Shahril Ishak, Khairul Amri and Agu Casmir - have since joined the exodus this year.

But judging from the Indonesia-based players' performance at the disastrous Suzuki Cup in Hanoi, the observers feel that Singapore football has taken one step forward and three steps back.

In fact, one source even called the departure to the ISL the 'the No. 1 problem for the national football team', while another, from Indonesia, said: 'The last thing Singapore football needs is another player joining the ISL.'

Here are the three reasons why:

1. FITNESS PROBLEMS

According to former Tanjong Pagar coach Tohari Paijan, who follows ISL football closely, the set-up there is not professional enough.

He noted: 'Sometimes the fixtures get cancelled and the team doesn't even know when it is going to play next, so how are the players going to train properly?'

As a result, the players have to put up with either a fixture pile-up or a prolonged period on the road. This causes their fitness level to drop which translates into poor displays on the pitch.

One prime example could be found in Ridhuan's sluggish displays. On his day, the speedy winger - who can easily clock sub-11s for the century sprint - is mercurial.

The 26-year-old also helped Arema Indonesia to last season's league title and began this term with a bang, scoring five goals in eight games.

However, in Hanoi, Ridhuan sputtered to a sorry exit in all three games against the Philippines, Myanmar and Vietnam.

When one's body is tired, his legs will not do his bidding, causing decisions to go wrong, passes to go astray and chances to go abegging.

Baihakki and Emuejeraye struggled to cope with direct runs, Casmir, though he scored the injury-time winner against Myanmar, did not do enough to shed his languid image, Amri broke down in that crucial match against Vietnam, and Asean's top striker Alam Shah failed to find the target.

Only skipper Shahril, and the combative Fahrudin looked their usual selves but obviously this wasn't enough.

2. FEAR OF GETTING INJURED

One source told The New Paper: 'Our opponents looked more hungry for victory than our Lions. Maybe they (the Lions) have more loyalty now to their paymasters instead of their countries.'

Kadir Yahaya, who used to be an assistant coach at ISL club Pelita Jaya, said: 'The players could be worried about injuring themselves because if they return to their clubs injured, the management won't hesitate to expel these foreign players.

'In the ISL, you can hire and fire a foreign player midway through a season and it's a thriving business there.

'Many player agents there are just waiting to offer foreign players to clubs,' said Kadir, who was at Pelita from 2007 till last year.

It is a worrying hypothesis, but with yearly contracts worth between US$65,000 and US$100,000 ($85,000 and $131,500) and win bonuses ranging from US$200 to US$1,000 per match, one wouldn't put it beyond the Indonesian clubs to whisper a word of caution into the Singaporean players' ears.

The money is immense, considering the average monthly wage of a top S-League player is between $4,000 and $8,000.

According to previous media reports, Singapore players who have moved to Indonesia have had their salaries doubled, along with privileges such as chauffeured cars.

'Make sure you don't get injured,' would be more than enough to sow a seed of doubt in their minds when faced with 50-50 challenges.

3. FALSE SENSE OF SUPERSTARDOM

The foreign stars in the ISL don't have to wash their own jerseys, nor do they have to clean their own boots. Some even have keychains, T-shirts and caps bearing their names and faces.

In his stint with Persija Jakarta last year, Baihakki was quoted as saying: 'Of course, I want to stay longer. I walk out of training smelling nice as I'm not carrying any dirty boots or clothes.

'I'm mobbed by fans and feel like a real professional footballer. Who doesn't want to have a life like this?'

Alam Shah stopped for 15 minutes just to have his photos taken with fans and Ridhuan is now known in Indonesia as R6, a la Cristiano Ronaldo's CR7 monicker.

With fireworks, flares and even bonfire lighting up in the stands, it is easy to get carried away and think that they have arrived or are, following the latest case of staying up beyond curfew, above the rules.
Ridhuan with fan

One source said: 'They play in Indonesia but it's as if they are already playing for Barcelona.'

Another said: 'After receiving star status, they think they are big shots and don't pull their weight during matches.

'Looking at their performances during the Suzuki Cup, I don't think the national team is benefiting at all from these players going to the ISL.

'When Fandi (Ahmad) went to Groningen, you could tell the positive impact it had on the national team because he came back a better player.

'I don't think you can say the same about those who went to Indonesia.' (david lee)

Japan football players want bigger rewards

Soccer Extreme : Japan's football stars are considering boycotting international matches unless the national association improves bonuses and other conditions, a daily said Saturday.

Lawyers for the Japan Football Association and the Japan Pro-Footballers Association (JPFA) have been negotiating without progress on players' demands, the Nikkan Sports said.

The FA has yet to give a "concrete answer" to the demands, which were in place before this year's World Cup in South Africa, JPFA lawyer Taisuke Matsumoto told the daily. "We must think about our next move."

Matsumoto said the players cannot walk out on World Cup qualifiers and other official tournaments. But the daily said it is highly possible that they would boycott international friendlies.

The lawyer is to hold a meeting with the players on December 27 to discuss their next move when they start a training camp at home for the January 7-29 Asian Cup in Qatar, the Nikkan Sports said.

They are also seeking salary guarantees for injury sustained in internationals, as well as their image rights.

Japan's players are paid no appearance money but are given a daily allowance of 10,000 yen (120 dollars) for taking part in an international. A win or draw gives them a bonus payment which is decided on the ranking of the opponents.

The bonus was 150,000 yen each for the 1-0 friendly win over Paraguay on September 4 and 200,000 yen for the historic 1-0 upset of powerhouse Argentina on October 8, both at home, the daily said.

It was 50,000 yen for the October 12 goalless away draw with South Korea.

The Japanese players would have pocketed 100,000 yen each if they had won the match, compared with a victory bonus set at three times that for the South Koreans, the Nikkan Sports said.

"The FA hasn't changed the amounts of payments since the 2002 World Cup," an anonymous veteran international was quoted by the daily as saying. "Of course, everyone tries to work hard for the country and themselves. But everyone is a professional and they are staking their life on every match. I want the FA to rate us as other countries do." Indonesia breaks Philippine unbeaten streak in Suzuki Cup

Soccer Extreme : The Philippine Azkals’ unbeaten run has come into a halt after meeting Team Indonesia in the first leg of the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup semifinals.

The Indonesians scored 1-0 to claim the first semifinal match against the Filipino booters at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Cristian Gonzales (pict) of Indonesia made the goal in the 31st minute.

With 80,000 Indonesians plus Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono watching live at the venue, their loud cheers definitely helped Team Indonesia to play their very best and win over the Azkals.

It was the first time the Azkals lost a game in this year’s Suzuki Cup. In the qualifiers last October, the Filipinos beat Timor Leste, 5-0, then drew with Laos (2-2) and Cambodia (0-0). They went on in the quarterfinals to score a 1-1 draw against Singapore and a 2-0 win over defending champion Vietnam. The Azkals eventually qualified for the semifinals by drawing with Myanmar, 0-0.

Filippine, Philip Younghusband (blue)

The Philippines still has the chance to redeem itself from the loss to Indonesia in the second leg set on December 19. It can still win the tie if it scores a 2 goal difference in the second leg. The Filipinos next semifinal game against the Indons will also take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. (ABS-CBN)

PREVIEW

The Philippine national football team takes on Indonesia in the two-legged semi-final of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup beginning on Thursday (December 16) at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. The Azkals, though considered as the weakest squad in the competition, secured a Final 4 seat for the first time in the 16-year history of Southeast Asia’s biennial football championship.

At the start of group stage play, the Filipinos held Singapore to a 1-1 draw, then humbled defending champion Vietnam 2-0 before the eyes of 40,000 Vietnamese fans. Simon McMenemy’s side, led by Fulham netkeeper Neil Etheridge, was held to a goalless stalemate by Myanmar on December 8 but clinched a seat in the semifinals because they finished second in their group. The match on Thursday is officially the Philippines’ home game but the country lacks a stadium that suits international standards so they will lose their chance to play in front of the home crowd. The second match is set on December 19 and will also be held in the Indonesian capital. Vietnam and Malaysia will meet at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium Wednesday night, while the return fixture is on Saturday at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi.

Indonesia, which topped Group A with three wins, will now enjoy a huge support from an expected crowd of more than 80,000 at the Bung Karno Stadium. But despite the Reds and Whites’ good run in the group stage, the players are also aware that they must not take their opponents lightly. Philippines coach McMemeny, meanwhile, said he will stick to the same game plan and strategy that has surprisingly brought them this far.

Will the Philippines’ football fairy tale continue? We think so. But regardless of the outcome of their semifinal clash against Alfred Riedl’s side, the campaign of the Azkals can already be considered a success.

AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 : Philippines men’s football team

Soccer Extreme : Who knew that a lot of Filipinos would be interested in football. After all, we are more of a basketball country.

In the meantime though, our men’s football team, the Azkals, are taking center stage as they advanced to the semi-finals of the prestigious AFF (ASEAN Footbal Federation) Suzuki Cup which is a big accomplishment for the team after being one of the traditional whipping boys of the tournament.

Probably aside from the fact that it will be our biggest milestone at the AFF Suzuki Cup, the ladies out there are more interested with our players especially those with foreign blood. I’m guessing that today there will be a lot of girls googling for these three Azkals.

Neil Etheridge

Etheridge began attending the Chelsea academy in 2003, where he was also teammates with eventual Philippine internationals James Younghusband and Phil Younghusband. He started out as a forward but eventually switched to a goalkeeper after being asked by his coach. In 2006, he moved to local rivals Fulham, and signed professional forms for the club.

Maradona could be the coach of the Iranian team

Soccer Extreme : It takes little to fuel speculation about the career of Argentine football great Diego Maradona but one nod from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was enough for a newspaper to report he is line to coach Iran.

“President Ahmadinejad: Maradona might be head coach of the national team,” read the headline splashed across the front page of Iranian daily Ebtekar on Monday, along with a large photograph of the World Cup winner.

Rumours have swirled in recent months of Maradona, who took Argentina to the quarter finals of this year’s World Cup, taking charge of an Iran side which last qualified for the tournament in 2006.

At a ceremony held to honour medal winners from the recent Asian Games in China, Ahmadinejad confirmed that Maradona was due to visit the Islamic Republic at some time in the future.

“When asked about reports of Maradona becoming Iran’s new head coach, he nodded his head,” the newspaper reported.

Maradona, 50, is an admirer of Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, the fiery left-wing president of Venezuela who is a close ally of Iran, and has expressed his admiration of Ahmadinejad. All three are foes of the United States.

“I’ve already met Fidel and Chavez… now I need to meet your president. I’d like to meet Ahmadinejad,” he said in 2007 when he sent a signed soccer shirt as a gift to Iran. (reuters)

PREVIEW MATCH

Thailand coach Bryan Robson is hopeful that his team can maintain their good record against Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium when the two sides clash in their final Group A game on Tuesday evening.

Bryan Robson : Thais looking to dominate Indonesians again

The Thais have come out on top in both previous AFF Suzuki Cup meetings against the home side in Jakarta. They famously took the 2002 title by downing the hosts on penalties in the final and also won 1-0 in the first leg of the semi-finals two years ago.

With Thailand desperately needing a victory to guarantee their progression to the last four after drawing against Laos and Malaysia, Robson is hoping that luck will continue to shine on his side at the often hostile venue.

"I hope that it is a lucky stadium for us because sometimes things like that can work in your favour when the players believe in that as well," said the Englishman.

"But the most important thing for me is for my players to believe in themselves that they have the confidence to go out tomorrow and believe that they can win the game because I think we have the ability to achieve that.

"My players are used to playing in big games. They have been to big stadiums with passionate away fans so I don't have any fears about them being able to handle a big atmosphere at the stadium.

"And sometimes the better players respond to a great atmosphere. In the first two games, it's been quite quiet but maybe in this next game, my big players will rise to the challenge and enjoy the atmosphere in the stadium."

Indonesia may have already booked top spot in the group with two wins in as many games, but Robson dos not anticipate that it will make things any easier for his players.

"With Indonesia having qualified and finishing top of the group, they've got the job done and I suppose that the coach now can look to freshen things up for the semi-finals and protect the players who are injured or on yellow cards.

"But it does concern me sometimes that fresh players coming in have a point to prove. They will want to impress the coach so it makes it a much tougher game."

On his part, Robson has pledged to make changes to his side that drew 0-0 with Malaysia on Saturday.

"We have been showing a bit of tiredness towards the end of both games so I'm looking to make some changes – not too many – tomorrow to freshen the team up again.

"Some players are playing their fourth games in nine days since last Sunday. It's very difficult to get the freshness back into them after a short period of time but I do feel that we're just that little bit fresher than we were coming into the tournament and the first game."

Indonesia assistant coach Wolfgang Pikal insisted that his side will not be taking Thailand any more lightly than they normally would although he did indicate that there would be changes to the team.

Said the Austrian: "The main thing for us is that we're trying to help the players to recover after the last two games. We have two players injured – Hamka Hamzah and Yesaya Desnam – and there is a possibility that we will rotate some of the players for the next game because some of them have yellow cards (skipper Firman Utina and Ahmad Bustomi) and we don't want to take a risk.

"But we are still hoping for a good game and to win against Thailand. We are not here for holidays and our big motivation is that we want to get ready for the start of the semi-finals. We also have the responsibility to our fans and the Indonesian people to try to win the match.

"We have a great respect for Thailand. They are a very good team and our history shows that Indonesia have not won many important matches against them. They are under a lot of pressure because this is their last chance to go to the semi-finals and we know that are going to play offensively and try to win the match." (AFF)
