PREVIEW MATCH
Singapore defender Daniel Bennett will miss his nation's AFF Suzuki Cup Group B encounter with Myanmar on Sunday after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with the Philippines.
The England-born centre-half had his left leg in a brace as a precautionary measure following Thursday's match and did not train with the team on Friday, leaving head coach Raddy Avramovic to replace the 32-year-old with Precious Emuejeraye.
"It can happen and you can't do much about it but the player who is coming in, Precious, is experienced," said Avramovic of Bennett's absence. "But Daniel's definitely out."
Despite the surprise draw with the Philippines, Avramovic believes little has changed in the situation facing his team as they seek to reach the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup once again.
"We dropped two points because we already had them in our pocket until the last point of the match," said the Serb coach of his team's opening encounter. "But what has happened has happened and it's a very simple situation.
"Before we started this tournament the question was about Vietnam and Myanmar, and we need to win against those teams to qualify. You must beat one of those teams and nothing has changed.
"If you want to qualify you must beat the other opponents and in this case it's Myanmar and for them it's a similar situation. We shouldn't wait until the last game."
Singapore face a Myanmar side still smarting from a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of tournament co-hosts and defending champions Vietnam on Thursday, with the result increasing the pressure on Tin Myint Aung's side to pick up at least a draw against the three-time champions.
The Myanmar coach, however, is confident his team can put the opening day disappointment behind them and perform well against the Singaporeans.
"This is a really difficult situation," he said. "Our team was never expecting this result and I have already motivated my team for the next game.
"My players know football is like this sometimes and if you play badly or are weak you will lose. If you are aggressive you will get a good result.
"In football you have three results, you can win, lose or draw. Life is like this too and if you lose you are going down, you are finished.
"We need to have hope. We need to play well against Singapore and the Philippines. We have hope. I have already talked to my players and I think they will try hard in the next game." (AFF)
