Preview Match (football-italia) : Napoli are only four points behind Milan and fans are dreaming of the Scudetto. Serafino Ingardia feels a reality check is required.

If movie producer Aurelio De Laurentiis was to turn the story of this Napoli side into a film it would probably be a spaghetti western with Edinson Cavani as the main star on the verge of an impossible mission.

>> Napoli Ultras

Napoli’s season so far has exceeded any possible expectations as the Azzurri currently sit second in the table, only four points behind League leaders Milan. Furthermore, they are the only Italian side still in the Europa League.

A lot of the praise must go to De Laurentiis, sporting director Riccardo Bigon and Coach Walter Mazzarri. Napoli have significantly improved from last season and this is because the Azzurri project is paying off.

The players are also doing a superb job and the dressing room seems much more united than it used to be. Selling Fabio Quagliarella was perhaps the right thing to do in order to end jealousy and rivalry in the team.

Improvement has been gradual at the San Paolo, but this campaign is already a masterpiece as the Azzurri are set to break all their previous records. In 2007-08, the season of their return to Serie A, they finished eighth with 50 points – 50 goals scored and 53 goals conceded – which was a great result.

The following campaign was a little less successful since they finished 12th with 46 points (+43 and -45). Last term was impressive and the Azzurri‘s final position reflected their ambitions as they ended the campaign in sixth with 59 points (+50 and - 43).

Only seven months later they find themselves challenging for the title, a big jump for a club which financially cannot be regarded as a top team yet, although in terms of passion and crowds stands amongst the best in Europe.

With 17 games still to play, the Azzurri have already collected 40 points which means they only need 20 more to overcome last season’s achievement. What impresses the most though is the difference in goals scored and conceded which so far is significantly better than in the past having scored 32 goals and conceded only 20.

Napoli have kept a clean sheet six times in the last seven games. This underlines how thanks to Mazzarri’s work this side has become much more experienced. It is no coincidence that they often manage to win by a goal while keeping it very tight at the back.

Pundits are questioning whether Napoli are the ‘anti-Milan’ (read : Cavani : Napoli can be the anti-Milan this season) and by answering that it should be automatic to see whether they do stand a chance to win the title or not. Napoli fans are of course dreaming about the Scudetto, which looking at the current situation does not appear to be such an impossible target. The more the term progresses the more supporters keep on believing that this is actually possible. But is it really? Unfortunately, it would take a miracle of San Gennaro to see them getting the Tricolore.

It will be almost impossible for Napoli to have a real go at it unless they produce further improvement from their girone d’andata which the Azzurri closed with 36 points. If they were to repeat themselves – which may be difficult as they have away games at Roma, Milan, Palermo and Juventus – the Partenopei would finish the season with 72 points which is clearly not enough to win Serie A.

They could have enough to finish third, although we must note that this season looks increasingly more competitive. Inter will shortly get back into the top positions, Roma are proving to be a rather solid side and Milan should continue their good run which could reward them with the Scudetto.

Dreams aside, reality says that Napoli are not good enough for the title yet. Cavani is no Diego Maradona and the Azzurri today are not as good as they were in 1987 or 1990. But this doesn’t mean this season will end up as a flop because they are one of the few clubs around who are actually building on something real for the future.

Napoli can do well in Europe even though they face a difficult round against Villarreal. They also have a chance to beat Inter and stay in the Coppa Italia while they must aim for a top four finish in Serie A. If they do that by beating the likes of Lazio, Juventus and Palermo they would already be celebrating a fantastic achievement.

But the Scudetto is not for them yet because calcio is nothing like cinema and patron De Laurentiis knows as much. As he wisely said the Azzurri have the right to dream but cannot afford to live off dreams. They must stay focused on something real and achievable – fourth place.
