Preview Match : Well that was a little more like it. By no means an easy victory at Molineux but one which was thoroughly deserved and though it took Kenny Dalglish four games to get his first win, he did so in a fashion which offers hope of better things to come between now and the end of the season.Not that one should get carried away by 3-0 win over a side which has been battling against relegation since they kicked off their season against Stoke back in mid-August. However Wolves are no pushovers at home, having already beaten Man City and Chelsea there this season so the manner with which Liverpool out-fought and out-worked a side which is all about its battling spirit was particularly encouraging. Going forward Liverpool looked bright and inventive whilst at the back they looked as solid as they have all season, keeping their first clean sheet in seven league games. Torres played well, Meireles played better and even Christian Poulsen wasn’t bad.
One good performance means little in isolation and though it continued the improvement witnessed against Everton, if it can’t be followed up with a similar showing against Fulham then it was all for nought. Perhaps that’s a tad dramatic but with over half the season gone there’s little time left feet finding or corner turning.
Much like Wolves last week, Fulham come in to this game on the back of one of their best periods of the season. Three of their five league wins have come in their last five games, a period which has seen Mark Hughes’ side pick up a possible ten points from fifteen and notch their first away win of the season. Although they’ve only won once on the road, they have managed six away draws from eleven games and have proven a difficult test for nearly every side they’ve faced this season.
Fulham are a solid, physical side who do try to play a bit of football but try a lot harder to prevent the other side from creating anything. If Liverpool can match their commitment, win the battle in midfield and show some more creativity going forward then they’ll be stringing together their longest winning run since mid-November. Two games may not seem like much of run to many but it’s a start and few Reds fans will disagree that it’s about damn time Liverpool’s season got itself started.
