Spurs to miss out on £8 million defender, as Keane pounces

Tottenham are set to miss out on West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand, with Sunderland nearing a deal for the former England under-21 international. The player has been linked with a whole host of moves over the past week or so, but it is now understood that he could complete a move to the Stadium of Light by this evening. (The Sun)

The 23-year old has struggled for form at Upton Park over the past 18 months or so largely due to injuries. Ferdinand has spent his whole career at the Hammers, making a total of 161 appearances for the club. Sunderland manager Roy Keane will have to cough up at least £8 million, which Hammers boss Alan Curbishley is demanding.

I'm not really sure what to make of this move. Ferdinand, on his day, is one of the best defenders in the country but unfortunately for West Ham fans, he hasn't had many of those days. I think a fresh start for Ferdinand could do him the world of good and help him restart his push for a place in the England senior squad.
